Uh, what exactly is live about that? It looks a lot like a preprogrammed lightshow for a premade mashup, none of the buttons seem to actually map to any samples.

Here's Madeon's Pop Culture for comparison.

Oh shit, with the Final Fantasy clip at the end... This is good. This is very good.

Dang, that Midi Fighter is huge. I was curious about where it came from and found this behind the scenes article.

I had more or less the same thought, but there is some parts that are directly mapped to samples, they just change when he hits a trigger to move to the next part of the song. The formations of lights are obviously pre-programmed, but I'd wager they're triggered the same way.

I went looking to see what other people were doing live with similar boards: Here's an interesting case. At the point in the video I linked, he's hitting the same single button over and over again. Each time he hits the button it progresses to the next note in the pre-programmed sequence, but timing and duration is live.

Short answer is that I think it's live in a meaningful way, it's just very complicated which obscures what's actually going on in the video. I know nothing about this stuff though, so I could be way off.

I love this.
And looking through the sample list there are quite a few familiar names, but even more I don't know.
Oh if only there was a Spotify playlist to these songs... *looks innocently* ;)

Yeah, I've precisely zero experience with Midi Fighters, but this looked like he was most definitely "playing" the whole song, and that the little flourishes in the light design were, aside from just being pretty and fun, also visual triggers for him that the subroutines he was triggering had gone off properly, and probably also cued his muscle memory into the next part of the song.

Incredibly impressive.
