Early Urban Planning: Ancient Mayan City Built on Grid No other city from the Maya world was planned using this grid design, researchers say. There is more background on what was typical on Urban Planning in Ancient Central Mexico.

They were better at planning than my usual slapdash constructions in Cities: Skylines!

Curious about the cattle ranchers protecting the city remains from looters. What was the area like before it was covered in grass?

What was the area like before it was covered in grass?

As a guess, covered in some kind of vegetation that was growing wild, possibly grass, possibly other vegetation. I have seen pics of stuff in South America taken from the air and they sometimes know there is something there because of the unnaturally regular shapes of vegetation, showing that plants are growing on manmade ruins.

I also walked along a very regular hilltop once, with large 300 year old trees growing out of it, looking for a Roman wall, only to discover that I was walking on the top of what was left of it. I had been looking for a stone wall, but it had been a wooden palisade and they had dug a trench first and then piled up dirt and then topped it with the palisade a thousand years earlier. The wooden wall was all gone and the very regular hill was all that was left of it.

Just to clarify, Maya cities were not in Ancient Central Mexico. The one they're talking about is in Guatemala, and the Maya in Mexico were (are, really) in the Southeast.
