People favorite comments for different reasons. I would like to be clear: I favorited poffin Boffin's first comment because I agree and that is exactly how I feel.

There is someone sitting in Silicon Valley right now going why didn't I come up with this idea. 20 Billion IPO valuation for certain.

I'm sure the humane society was going for implausible but yeah I could totally see someone pitching this as an idea and making bank with it. I mean it worked for couchsurfing and unlicensed cab drivers.

They really missed a visual opportunity when the one puppy-drone went under the bridge:
His paw should have gently grazed the surface of the river, à la Harry Potter/Hippogriff.

I thought the missed visual opportunity was ass sniffing as they flew by one another.

I could tell it was fake from the very beginning because no one would let Dad's mustache into a real commercial.

...and now that puppy, in control of his own drone, fights crime and rights wrongs. He is... Druppy, the drone puppy.

I agree puppies are not products and that puppy mills are awful and shelter dogs are the greatest. I tend to like the Humane Society of the United States (they are maybe a bit militant for some people, but think of of them as the PETA that's actually good at this stuff).

This kind of missed the mark for me. I mean, part of me is like "yes, please deliver me a puppy I can cuddle" but only if that puppy needs it (I will volunteer to come cuddle your puppies, btw). I feel like it was a weird bait-and-switch that didn't feel effective. This family was excited about this puppy. They wanted it. They didn't toss it away at the end. There was nothing to say this wasn't going to become a beloved family pet.

I don't know. I just don't think the images of cute puppies flying in drones quite matched up with the message of "you are a bad person if you liked this."

I understand what they were going for, but it didn't work.

(Get a mutt from your shelter! Older dogs are amazing! I love old lady dogs because they're awesome! But if you want a puppy, there are good mutt puppies out there! Find a breed rescue if you want a specific breed! And there are responsible breeders that are trying to make strong, healthy dogs and aren't breeding a daughter with her grandfather to get a head shape right! There is nuance in all of this. I know that's too complicated for this campaign but this felt less about puppy mills and more about ... I don't even know.)

I thought it was GTA 5 updating this GTA3 commercial.

So I'm disappointed but for different reasons.

Knowing how crows go after hawks, I wonder how they would respond
to a flying chihuahua? I don't think the arrival would be very cute.

If this were available when my kids were young, say 3-6 years old, I could have spent the better part of my weekend mornings at the park just lying in the grass looking up at the sky with them at my side looking for drone puppies. We could have played puppy bingo. "I just need a spaniel for bingo dad!"

The boyfriend showed me this the other day, and I was thisclose to running out the Humane Society. Though, in general, I agree with darksong's assessment.

That being said, I'm in love with the song. Anybody know where I can download this (or similar)? Yeah, I've already found the Natalie Merchant and Johnny Cash versions -- they don't hit the same spot that this one does.

The mere mention of the idea put me in mind of this cover from a National Lampoon publication.

For an extra fee the puppy is fed a very large meal before takeoff and the drone is programmed to find an open convertible and hover over it.

Ummm, why do you remove the puppy from the drone? NOT as advertised.

The corgi-heeler mix we used to have LOVED heights. Glass elevators were her absolute favorite. She would have been so happy, zooming around in a drone.

Yes, that was a Joaquin Phoenix in Her level of mustache abomination.

I'm fully on Team Mutt already, so this kind of campaign is playing to the converted here. Some of the independent rescue groups can get a bit fervent, though. A friend started the adoption process with one and pulled out when they wanted him to agree to not just an initial inspection and interview, but also an ongoing oversight process. (He then went down to the local humane society and adopted a wonderful dog, so the final result was great.)

I guess they're not as evil as PETA (that's a very low bar), but regardless of what you think of their actual goals and their efforts, the fact is that the HSUS relies on consumer confusion to solicit donations from well-meaning people who think their money is going to go to animal shelters.

The HSUS does not operate shelters. They are not associated with any local humane society. In fact, they knowingly damage the actual shelters that help unwanted pets, by diverting funds that they know full well donors intended to go to shelters.*

So I guess in a way this is an appropriate PR campaign for an organization that depends so heavily on deceiving consumers.

Puppy mills really are cruel, and it would be awesome if people just stopped buying from them, period, but this campaign really buries that message in with a bunch of deceptive fluff and cute videos to draw people in and then shame them for not knowing better. There is a place for humane responsible breeders. Puppy mills are inexcusable, though.

* The ASPCA does almost the same thing, too, except that they operate a grand total of one shelter.

This strikes me as the kind of satire that is less successful just because people like it so much they want it to be real.

Also, I think most of the squee-factor is stuff that doesn't have anything to do with why puppy mills are so awful. Yeah, probably puppies wouldn't enjoy being drone-carried but they're not shown being freaked the fuck out, they seem cool with it. Then people are cuddling and loving on nice animals. I guess it works in that hey, this seems great because you only see the good part but man what happens behind the scenes is awful. But you don't get that from the viewing.

That analysis complete, I'm gonna go watch it a tenth time.
