Presenting The 2016 Toyota Chocobo

So, how do you increase interest in your compact hybrid cars? Well, if you're Toyota, and you're selling to a Japanese market, you run an ad themed around the iconic music for one of the most famous JRPG transportation options.

This is just one of a series of ads that Toyota is running in Japan, where iconic JRPG music is being used to sell the Aqua (better known as the Prius C here in the US.) Here's one using the Dragon Quest III overworld theme. One nice touch is that the colors of the cars are used to represent one of the more common endgame parties - Hero, Soldier, Sage, and Priest. And for a bit more recent fun, here's an ad using music from Monster Hunter.

As delightful as this is, I would strongly advise against purchasing this car. It will just run drive away as soon as you step out of it and you'll have to buy a completely new one in the next town.

Can I breed them and make one that lets you climb near vertical hills?

The default Chocobo theme is nice but that ad is a missed opportunity.

Ha! And I was just thinking that there have been so many generic remixes and covers that I'd forgotten how charmingly "you are riding a giant chicken, it's happening, roll with it" the original composition is.

I like the license plates in all of these.

I saw the commercial, wow!

Those spoony bards! They sure know their audience.

Man, now I really want a Prius if it will let me play Hot & Cold Chocobo!

So many hours spent raising a Gold Chocobo...

That's an amazingly ugly car, and the color scheme doesn't help at all. Still, the scenery is nice. New Zealand? South-Eastern Australia?

Is there a tuba-themed commercial for the Prius wagon with extra storage space? Is there another commercial that shows off how many MP a Super White-exterior Prius can restore? Is there a samba-themed commercial for a Prius that can only drive in forests? Is there a solar-gas hybrid Prius ("THE MORNING SUN HAS VANQUISHED THE HORRIBLE GASOLINE-FUELED NIGHT.")?

Cynically speaking, if you're aiming for the pocketbooks of people in their 30s whose geeky childhoods carried them into lucrative jobs, you really can't do much better than this!

I am way too broke, but if anything was going to make me impulse-buy a car, this would be it.

That's a pretty amazing road. I wonder where it is?

The cost of mimett greens alone would put this out of my price range.

They're nice if you're environmentally conscious or want to save on gas, that sort of thing. But when you're taking the kids to Blitzball practice or picking up a few pallets of megalixirs at Costco, nothing beats the convenience and safety of an airship.

This was adorable! I wonder if the husband would be OK with painting our Prius yellow?

Chocobos are notoriously stinky to keep around, and they want us to sit inside one? Almost as bad as Tauntaun!

Ugh. I hate getting stuck behind a fat chocobo on my way to work. I swear it's like those things just don't move.

Every single time one of these commercials come on TV, I turn to my wife and say "What's that music? I know it from somewhere." And she says "I dunno" (because she hates games and therefore is totally unfamiliar with the music). And then I remember that it's Final Fantasy, so I say "Oh, it's Final Fantasy". And she says "Huh."

I don't know which is weirder: that I can forget every single time, prompting me to ask,or that she can also forget every single time, saying "I dunno" instead of "Some stupid game, like the last time the commercial came on".

If the horn goes "wark! wark!" I'm in.

Parking with those things is crazy though. What if there's no empty spots to set down on the entire continent? A black chocobo will let you land in the forest and get to the Dark Elf's cave easily, although you should remember not to be wearing any metal equipment while there.

As long as we're talking about giant chicken music, here's METAL CHOCOBO, because the species is adapted unusually well for headbanging.

My kids are never playing fucking Blitzball.

Such a Sinful sport... At least Sphere Break will help their math skills.

There's definitely been some history of Final Fantasy × Toyota…

To this day whenever I see one on the street I go "Oh, the Squall car."

Do they have the proper motivation?

Although cake works better, of course.

Oh, the fat chocobo is such an awesome mount. Then again, there are a ton of chocobo mounts in FFXIV - in addition to large and in charge there, there's your regular combat bo (who can be dyed - mine has been made into the blue bo of happiness), your racing bo (which you can then crossbreed to get faster and faster birds), two two-seater bos (one is a referral reward, the other is obtained through a paid wedding service), as well as the Parade Chocobo (fat bo plus mitre.) And we're getting black chocobos in the expansion.
