Losing a bet should hurt

After his city's team lost a playoff round, the crowned top mayor in the world puts on a floor show to fulfill the terms of a bet with a rival politician. An alternative link (with possibly marginally better audio) has the mayor explaining why he took this particular approach and allows him to credit the performers. (Warning: Frozen music.)

I pure straight love Nenshi, even if he is flatter than an ironing board.

That was pretty great. Too bad there's no head-on video.

Notable things: The city councillors in suits behind them look terribly bored until the really big choir comes in.

The LED sign that feeds them the lyrics says "Applause" at the end, like nobody would have thought to do it otherwise.

I think the CBC link has better (more head-on) video).

That is totally awesome. Pity the mayor has no idea about what note he's supposed to come in on.

That instrumental bridge is killer...so many kids singing that song for elementary school talent shows, just siting around for the entrance....using it to get a bigger choir on stage is a nice choice.

So cute, and what a nice way to roll with losing the bet!

So I'm totally in the tank for Nenshi; I've said he's great here before and I'm sure I will again.

But the brilliant subtle touch is that the Ducks jersey he's wearing is a 97-99 era Mighty Ducks jersey. Nenshi notes that it has purple (his signature colour), but it also happens to be from the expansion-era Disneyfied phase of the Ducks. It's sort of the equivalent of making a bet where the loser has to wear a t-shirt with the winner's face on it, then picking the yearbook picture of the winner from the most hormone, awkwardness and zit filled phase of 8th grade.

Wearing the Mighty Ducks Jersey was the lovely little tweak-on-the-nose the Ducks really needed.

I really thought the Blackhawks were going to slaughter them, given the cakewalk they got in the playoffs, but nope.

They changed the details of the bet on him (he thought he was agreeing to California Dreamin', until someone in the mayors office in Anaheim changed it) and Let it Go, is as he noted in his CBC interview yesterday morning, a song that's fairly complex and written for a female register. So yeah, he was making a bit of a dig, but I think it was a very gentle dig to that. Love him for doing it, and for having the sense of humour to go all in with it and make it a performance.

This was way more awesome than it had any right to be (even though I was expecting this post to be about architecture).

Nenshi as mayor is basically the only thing that could tempt me to move to Calgary.

It's going to be fascinating to see whether he stays in municipal politics after this term or launches to provincial or federal level.

How can I vote Nenshi for mayor of the world?

He's probably going to be a bit busy running Canada from 2020-30 but after that he might be available.

Here's hoping Rahm Emanuel has to sing this song in the next few days as well.

Now I want to see John Tory singing Can You Feel The Love Tonight.

I like our mayor, but I don't Nenshi like him.
