Now Something for the Ladies: Feminine Pictorialities

Feminine Pictorialities is "British Pathé's classic 'special selection for the ladies' from the 1930s [and] covers bathing and hat fashions, hairstyles, and women's sport." Among the 55 short films from 1934 and 1935: Woollies! Handbags! Cartoon fashions! And my favorite, a forerunner of 100 Years of Beauty (previously), Whirly, Curly Girls!

(Post title is taken from one of the short films.)

"Mounted Netball" is a very exciting game of women's basketball.

These are great. I love how right at the end of whirly curly she suddenly takes a drag on a cigarette. That fat one must have been borderline porn in its day.

Is it just me or does the cartoon fashion one yield a clip from a film about Preston North End football club?

So what is that method in the Woollies one?

I don't know about the women staying slim one being "borderline porn" for its day. Pre-Hays-Code Hollywood had a fair share of topless dancers, nude swimming, shower or bath scenes. That stereotypical naked girl straddling a chair which hides her boobs dates back at least to the 30s.

We've been male-gazing naked ladies for as long as there's been media, even stuff that's ostensibly aimed at an audience of women like how to stay slim or wear a bathing costume filler pieces.

But these are a great find.

They seem to have co-opted the queen to narrate the handbags hendbegs one.

The Cartoon Fashions link seems to have a video of a football team. I'm very disappoint I couldn't track that down, now I'm curious to see it.

In my attempt I found this which is also pretty great.
