So Dave has a distributable protest site up for the elian_true animation. What I want to know is, what does this mean: "Wazzup!!! To every tax paying American that felt they should have sent Elian Gonzalez to join his Mother (in the ocean)."

Hey, I am seriously asking what it means, and I did NOT mean to imply that Dave wrote it. I have no idea who wrote it. But "Wazzup", especially in the context of that commercial, is a greeting of camaraderie. So it seems to be saying "hello to all you like-minded people out there who wish Elian had drowned like his mother!"

OK, I'll take back my comment. So he didn't write it, but I think Eric's parsing is correct, so why would Dave repost such a tasteless comment? And why would he be so careless with the link from Scriptingnews ("my part") and the excessive exlamation marks ("!"), which conspire to make it look like these are Dave's words.

If you had a clue what was happening outside of your little cubicle or were willing to do a little web surfing, you'd find out that the AP was trying to shut those guys down, and that the site was mirrored at thousands of places on the Web, not just at Scripting News. Have a nice day.

Dave, how about responding to my question? How do you read the "join his mother" comment? I have been following the story closely, but I can't make sense that. This is not a personal attack (from me, anyway), just a question. I am sorry that I brought a whole dose of Dave related vitriol to this thread by mentioning that I found the site at scriptingnews.com.

Yes, of course Dave, I am well aware of the AP situation, partly because I've seen several other mirrors. Yours was the first to have the comment about sending Elian to sleep with the dolphins. I applaud you for the mirror, but why repost the comment? Why not just mirror the Flash file? Why make yourself look like a tasteless jingoist?

Yes, yes, I am now fully aware that it was not Dave who made this comment (though that's how it struck me at first, and I read Scriptingnews several times a week (only so I can get the jokes at Winerlog, I swear)). My question is, why would he mirror such a comment? To me, such a repost is an endorsement of the comment. Why not, as Jason Kottke did, just mirror the Flash file? It just seems bizarre. That's all. Not a big deal.

Let's see if I can show you how weird your comment is. First, I have no idea who Luke is, and I swear I wouldn't read his site unless someone parodied him. I would only read his site so I could understand the jokes on the parody site. My question is why would you ask such a question? To me, such a question is an endorsement of someone very awful like Adolf Hitler. Why not do what someone who designs nice websites, like Zeldman does, and live in New York City? My observation would have to be that I wish *this* Dave Winer would take over Winerlog. No offense, but the guy who's running it now has chnaged it from pretty decent satire into schoolyard Nyaah-nyaah; I no longer find it especially funny. Given the number of hits it no longer sends me, apparently I'm not the only one who thinks this. The original Winerlog was funny precisely *because* it could have been being written by Dave's twin brother, who hates him. (Note: I have no idea whether Dave has a twin brother, or whether they get along if so...)

The original Winerlog was funny precisely *because* it could have been being written by Dave's twin brother, who hates him I agree. He really got under my skin. When the new guy (John Grohol, a psychologist) took over I said on scripting news that sarcasm is best left to professionals. The original guy was one of the Suck writers, although I didn't appreciate it at the time, he was very very good.
