Love Your Professor

Laura Kipnis, professor of Cultural Affairs at Northwestern, wrote an article for The Chronicle of Higher Education that basically defends student/teacher sexual relationships. This article resulted in some students instituting charges under Title IX, which Kipnis describes here. (Title IX, previously) Kipnis has long held ideas contrary to current harassment doctrine (one argument against Kipnis here). Other NorthWestern academics are disappointed in Kipnis. But this is turning into a debate about academic freedom.

The Right Wing is ecstatic, of course, since Kipnis identifies as a Lefty.
Although Kipnis has been mentioned on the Blue before, I don't think she has been the subject of an FPP. Some stuff by her and about her writings:
"The People vs. Laura Kipnis", Dissent
"How to Look at Pornography" by Laura Kipnis [PDF]
"The Siren Song of the Scumbag", Salon review of Men: Notes from an Ongoing Investigation
"Adultery as an Act of Cultural Rebellion", Interview with David Bowman
"Love in the 21st Century" by Laura Kipnis (this article preceded her most famous book, Against Love)

This post was deleted for the following reason: We've had plenty of fighty threads about campus politics these days, and how students are too soft, and shouldn't we be skeptical about rape claims, and so on, and we don't need to have another. -- LobsterMitten

Jesus, the first and second links display a near-total lack of awareness about the existence of power in relationships between teacher and student (hell, at one point she even expresses incredulity that power can exist in such relationships). And her complete inability to comprehend why anybody would have a problem with this- to the point of comparing herself to victims of the Spanish Inquisition- just reinforces that she's oblivious to the reality of the relationships she's praising. How thoroughly sad.
