Red Wolves

Red Wolves are one of two species of wolves in North America. "The red wolf is one of the world’s most endangered wild canids. Once common throughout the southeastern United States, red wolf populations were decimated by the 1960s due to intensive predator control programs and loss of habitat. A remnant population of red wolves was found along the Gulf coast of Texas and Louisiana. After being declared an endangered species in 1973, efforts were initiated to locate and capture as many wild red wolves as possible. Of the 17 remaining wolves captured by biologists, 14 became the founders of a successful captive breeding program. Consequently, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service declared red wolves extinct in the wild in 1980."
On May 2nd a litter of pups was born at the Wolf Conversation Center in New York. This is a live feed of the den. Turn your speakers on, even when the pups are quiet and sleeping, the sound will bring peace and smiles.
Oh no, do not taunt me with live cam of tiny wild endangered puppies while I've got work to dooooo! Look at him yawn, the little one in back!!!!

This is from NY Wolf Conservation Center, which is a fantastic project started (a long time ago) by two people I am very proud to call my friends, Hélène Grimaud and Henry Fair.
These days the Center is a serious conservation and education effort with a national profile and a release program and lawyers and such. But many, many years ago it was just a couple of people following their dream. So if you were in the right place at the right time you could go up to the house and take a walk, and maybe go play with "the guys". So this is Hélène on one of those days. And this is a friend -- who certainly wasn't my wife at the time, just a friend who loved wolves and wanted to come along -- on maybe the happiest day of her life. Probably including our wedding, which occurred some time later.
