(Posner, near the end)Seriously, this illustrates an amusing irony: the left (and to a lesser extent the right) must constantly create new crises in order to ratchet up their rhetoric. This rhetoric has grown increasingly apocalyptic, even in the face of growing evidence to the contrary.
