The most awesome show nobody watched

PREVIOUSLY, on the Aquabats Super Show... (YouTube 4m) Grocery Store Attack - Fighting the aliens from Laserblast - The Thingy

It was a show that survived two seasons on the (now deceased) Hub Network, and it was amazing, but alas labored in the long shadow of PONY. (Hub's YouTube channel is still up, go figure, but is full of pony.)

Here's the (current!) Aquabats Super Vlog: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4. Watch these. More musical weirdness of this nature is on the band's official YouTube channel.

It's not from the show, but still: SUPER RAD

I have a terrible iPad-taken photo of MC Bat Commander posing for the camera with my (then) 4-year-old. Got that one up in my cube.

It's always fun to see a post full of links that I've already visited.

I listened to The Fury of the Aquabats! every single day, at least once per day and usually twice, all summer long in 1999, back when the world was fun and stupid and young and everything was possible.

Different album, but The Wild Sea is still a favorite track.

Oh, Aquabats...

It used to be shown (and might still occasionally show up) on cITV on Saturday mornings in the UK.

It was at the right time for us to enjoy it during breakfast, and everything was delightful.

Now it's on Amazon Prime. I think I need to be in a certain frame of mind to go down that particular hole.

I laughed right out loud at that grocery battle. I'm not sure what that says about me.

The thing that gets me is that for all its cheesiness, this show couldn't have been cheap to make. I mean how much does one car explosion cost? There were at least three that I noticed in the "Previously" clip.

My hetero life-mate is a decade younger than I am. He recently went on and on to me about how formative The Adventures of Pete & Pete was to him. This reminds me of that a little.

The Aquabats finally got TV success with Yo Gabba Gabba. It's weird to recognize the Bat Commander's voice coming out of a friendly monster on your toddler's favorite show.

Any time the Aquabats Super Show is mentioned here on the blue, I feel it is my duty to inform everyone that Matt "Strong Bad" Chapman wrote for the show and acted in at least one episode (as "Carl" on the episode "Kobraman" and yes, he was wearing a wrestling mask).

Funny coincidence, we just started to rewatch Aquabats Super Show and I was sad to see it didn't have a long life.

Netflix US has the first season up for streaming, and it is wonderful. It's like a perfect blending of Pee Wee's Playhouse, Batman '66, The Monkees, and Japanese tokusatsu programs, and it takes all of those influences as an organic part of the show, not just a winking reference for the parents. Fury of the Aquabats was basically my soundtrack back in '99-'00, but I'd lost track of the band until I found out that they were involved with Yo Gabba Gabba. I totally missed the Aquabats show proper when it was actually on the air, but I'm sure they'll pop up again somewhere sometime soon!

I think you also need to throw in some Sid and Marty Krofft and a massive spoonful of DEVO as well.

Aquabats Super Show was amazing. So many great little tidbits.

Burger rain.

All the ridiculous products from Gloopy.

Look! It's a cartoon!

I summon the Dude!

So cool how the first season time-loops back to the beginning of the season. Good times.

I like this show much better after seeing the scenes featuring Strong Bad.
