This is supposedly a "free colour vision test". I don't think it is, but it is both fun and only a little bit frustrating as you jab helplessly away.

28- Hawk.

Recently we opened a new exhibit at the museum where I work, and to prep our exhibition designer painted the walls. When we first saw them, my coworker and I immediately complimented him on the dark blue color. He was completely flummoxed because he perceived it to be a dark gray with no particular blue tone, and he really wanted gray walls. Over the last couple weeks we've asked our other coworkers who saw they walls what they perceived- almost everyone perceived navy or dark blue except for a couple who thought they were a dark green and our exhibits manager who saw charcoal gray. It's kind of amazing how everyone can perceive colors slightly differently!

25. If that's accurate, it's only by coincidence; my monitor is one of those TN screens where colors are a bit distorted at the edges because you see them at a slight angle, and I've had to play with the gamma to get things to look alright.

If anybody can find it, there was a game a few years ago where it challenged you to put ever more finely graded blocks of colour in order. So the first level might be five blocks from red to green, but the last was thirteen blocks from wheat green to clover green.

29 and 1

but that last one I purposely picked a random corner because I was sure the test was just marking absolutely anything as correct. It appears that (1) I was wrong and (2) I found it really easy to see spot off-color square in the green and brown instances. Blues were quite a bit harder (thought not hard enough apparently).

posted by kafziel at 1:50 PM on June 13, 2015

Looking at it again, I think I understand why hot pink is the hardest color for me: it's the only color used where the lighter shade makes it seem more intense, while for the rest of them it seems that the less intense color is the one to search for.

Wow, I have pretty crappy eyesight, but in terms of colour vision I am apparently a tiger. 20 correct, zero errors. On the 21st grid they all looked exactly the same, so I just let the timer run out rather than guess. The others were all totally obvious to me--I was not expecting that.
posted by hurdy gurdy girl at 2:47 PM on June 13, 2015

This is a weird test, because I am red-green (deuteranope) colorblind and do terribly on sort-the-hues tests, but I got 32 (robot, 96.6th percentile), with only the last few being difficult at all. Maybe being bad at hues means being good at brightness and saturation.

I hate my optic neurology. I see the grid illusion way too easily--everywhere that involves blocks of color with white space in between. In this test it's very distracting--am surprised no one else mentions it. Between that and also perceiving extreme after-images (like the previous grid's outline) and annoying floaters I can't live up to my potential in a test presented this way. You try to tell people how much all that combined with photosensitivity affects how you live your life and you know they're all "cry me a river". #FirstWorldProblems

8 on my first couple of tries, 21 on my third.

The timer's quite important, I think. The more squares you have to scan and make a decision about the longer it takes. Sooner or later, that factor alone's going to trip you up.

33. I blame my deficit vs restless nomad to my laptop's apparent lack of color calibration.

This is a weird test, because I am red-green (deuteranope) colorblind and do terribly on sort-the-hues tests, but I got 32 with only the last few being difficult at all. Maybe being bad at hues means being good at brightness and saturation.

Fascinating, in that once I got past 12 or so it stopped being obvious (for most colors), so it felt like I was just guessing - but it was obviously more than a guess, since I kept being correct for another 20 clicks. Could call it an example of intuition being based on actual sensory data that we're just not fully processing.
