WHERE IS THE NEXT VENTURE BROS SEASON? DON'T DISTRACT WITH THIS "TEH OFFICE SET IN HELL" NONSENSE.

VENTURE.

BROTHERS.

SEASON.

SIX.

NOW.

I too was disappointed by the lack of Venture Bros in this article.

You know, there are a lot of people who absolutely love Venture Bros, including some of my long time internet friends. Clearly I must check it out. For some reason the little I have seen didn't seem that great to me, but people don't froth like this about nothing (well, unless you're in the Tea Party, but I know that my friends and mefi aren't known for being bastions of right-wing ideology).

What I miss about Atlanta's arts and music scene is that it feels very small, because everyone has worked shit jobs everywhere in town so everyone knows everyone else. In that article alone, there were at least four people I know. Atlanta: weirder than you think. I miss it.

The Venture Bros. builds on you. If you're a fan of comics and old cartoons it's probably up your alley.

I actually cannot be in the same room when Venture Brothers is on. Don't get it.

My own opinion is that the best thing ever on Adult Swim was -- well, it's a toss up between Space Ghost Coast to Coast and Cartoon Planet. The Brak Show is also a contender, come to think of it.

The reason Venture Brothers episodes take forever is because Doc and Jackson are like 90% of the creative team. Their slow speed is the price we pay for one of the most unique shows on television. I'm happy (well, willing) to wait as long as it takes, because the result has yet to be unworthy of the time put into it.

Yeah, the thing with the Venture Brothers is that almost all of the humor is derived from the slow gradual accretion of things that by isolation aren't necessarily particularly funny, but that when piled up together turn into a tightly interconnected set of really hilarious in-jokes. Arrested Development, for example, does the same thing, but maybe because of the tamer setting it's easier to break through the initial ??? with that one.

Well I'll wait regardless because what are my other options? I'm going to not watch it out of spite once it finally appears? I mean, I guess I might forget and not manage to watch the episodes during the first showing or within the C3 window which probably would be less good. But of course I'll watch it. And then I stand at my TV like Oliver Twist asking for more.

But even so they do take along time. It's not like those two guys draw everything themselves. And the first four seasons came out in a relatively timely manner. I'm not sure why this seasons is taking so much longer.

Venture Bros actually breaks the mold, described in the article, of Adult Swim shows having no real continuity. In contrast, V. Bros is very sensitive to continuity. It's one of the things that makes it so utterly rich and memorable.

I didn't get into it until after Season 4. I think I resisted watching for a long time because of how frothy the fan base was and how ridiculous the concept appeared on paper. But it really is extraordinary television by any standard.

It's fucking absurd, yea. But it has a shitload of heart.

I think Venture Bros. is a (very good) grand treatise on masculinity (and manhood in general) that's made by and for people fascinated with the concept because living up to it has always eluded them. Maybe it also works for those who've succeeded but have become disillusioned with the expectations and supposed spoils.

Also I think Adult Swim is the number two dream job for older millennials next to Nintendo's Tree house.

Not even just millennials. I have known folks my age (late 30s) who were dying to get in their foot in the door there, and a few who succeeded.

I was considering making an FPP about this, but here seems like an appropriate place to put it: every episode of Home Movies is now available to watch on Adult Swim's website. There are obnoxious ads, but whatever, Home Movies is the best.

Supreme champion of that is 12 oz Mouse. At least I bet it is. I've still yet to be able to handle the whole thing. Maybe this'll give me the incentive to try again.

Gah. I came here to post pretty much the exact same thing. There really is something special about the camaraderie that develops among the weirdos in the south.

But MAN seeing that pic of Shane in the Spook Show shirt in the flippin' Guardian is bonkers.

It's a write-up of a tour of the Atlanta studio. Rick and Morty is made at Dan Harmon's animation/podcasting studio (Starburns Industries) in Burbank, CA. Not surprising it wasn't part of the tour.

I have never disliked anything from Adult Swim. Even moral orel. Well maybe Family Guy. But the Eric Andre show more than makes up for it. That shit is genius.

Seriously now that Mad Men is gone the best show on TV might be: Adult Swim Whatevers On Even Robot Chicken.

venture Brothers' obsession with the 60s and masculinity and surprisingly deep well of emotional complexity is why I often called it Mad Men With Superheros.

One thing with the Venture Brothers too, is that the first half of season 1 or so is a bit rough. I don't think Doc and Jackson quite figured out what the show was at that point beyond "it's like if Johnny Quest grew up and it's a parody of JQ". I've usually seen it recommended to start at, say, "Tag Sale - You're It!" (which I think is the 7th ep?), which is about where the show went from "decent enough I guess" to legitimately great.

Once you're hooked, it's probably good to circle back around and get the rest of Season 1, but, I think that may be where a fair amount of non-VB-getters go wrong, is starting at the beginning. Some of those first eps are "okay, a dirty Johnny Quest. Gotcha." which is SO not what the rest of the series is about.

"Tag Sale, You're It!" and "Ghosts of the Sargasso" are my usual recommendations for getting into the series. They lay out the setting and what the show is up to quite nicely.

"If you'd played by the rules- the ghost pirate rules!- none of this would be happening!"

Tag Sale You're It was when I was convinced there was Something amore Going On Here

Especially how it views geek monomania and social conventions, it's very understanding but very "oh god what was I DOING why couldn't I just be a human being for a half second!?"
posted by The Whelk at 2:39 PM on June 19, 2015 [2 favorites]

Tag Sale also introduces something like 90% of the core cast for the first two seasons and establishes their relationships.
