This year marked the debut of the Nick Danger Award for best mystery/detective audio drama. Very sad that Phil won't be around to hear future winners.

(slightly self-linky disclosure that I am involved with the Mark Time Awards, though I did not judge the Nick Danger group.)

You must mean the old same place. It's around back. Here's the key.

I believe I've touched on this at Me-Fi before, but it bears repeating. The "random" part of the philip-random moniker is directly attributable to the Firesign Theater, specifically a character from In the Next World You're on Your Own whose first name was Random. I figured if it could be a first name, why not a last name?

So yeah, Mr. Austin's is a passing I feel more than most. The cool weird uncle I never actually got to meet. Maybe in the next world.

He really might now be in two places at once. Probably in at least one of them he’s hanging out with Marx and Lennon.

Sad thing is that as a Firesign fan AND an Intellivision owner, I have a second reason to be sad.

BEE SEVEN TEEN BOMMMMMBER. THAT WAS NAWT THE TAWR-GIT!

Ah man. Firesign theater was hugely influential in my youth. I was a bored kid stuck in farm country, knowing nothing, watching the world pass me by. I discovered them through a middle school teacher, who of course was right out of college and terribly cool and knew all the good stuff. So I started listening to the records because they were weird and different and it took several listenings before I started to penetrate the outer layer and get all the elliptical callbacks and inside references and odd history jokes and find it really, really funny - but I could never get anyone around me to get that they were funny. On first listening, everyone was just confused.

So I was like the one 12-year old kid in rural Virginia who was totally into their work, and never caught on that I was supposed to be totally stoned and that would make it immediately funny.

The True White Brother is coming home. Remember what the Great Spirit said? If we did what we were supposed to do, and lived according to the Plan, White Brother would finish his work in the East and come back to us.

My friends and I put on a production of Nick Danger for a jr high talent show. That started a life-long trend of doing things only I and my friends think is funny.

Ruthlessly and doggedly:

My father introduced me to Firesign Theatre, and has made a point of how prescient they have turned out to be. I played "Temporarily Humboldt County" to my roommate, and asked him to guess when it was released. His guess was about 30 years off the mark.
