I look forward to reports of Puddle of Mudd being pelted off the stage with bottles.

After mumblemumble years, ICP is one of the few pieces of pop culture I still have no idea what to do with. I always feel like I'm watching a penguin in a pineapple hat unicycling down a sidewalk. There's no appropriate slot in my brain in which to file it away so I just don't think about it.

Somewhere in the last 24 months I went from gawk to kind of grudgingly admire to shrug-and-move-on with ICP/Juggalo stuff.

From my admittedly distant perspective, it seems to be settling down into a kind of Deadhead-but-with-clown-rappers thing -- some people are super into this band, which dovetails into a certain way of life, and they all get together and hang out.

There's a lot less tie-die and a lot more facepaint, a lot less grass and a lot more hooch, but basically if you feel like these are your people and rolling like this makes you happy and nobody's getting hurt, get down with your bad selves, Juggalos.

At about 18 minutes in they announce that Judah Friedlander is performing and they misspell his name. I love every part of that.

Is it just me or was this one all music, no (or much less) of the surrounding goings-on? (Aside, of course, from the running ticker messages)

The Bloodymania 9 wrestling roster is a who's who of wrestlers that really, really wish TNA wasn't circling the drain. Matt Hardy, MVP, Colt Cabana, and, uh, Matt Stryker?! Nah, he fits right in.

What an amazing lineup of bro rock, stoner acts, ICP wannabes, Linkin Park clones and various hybrids of the same.

One of the things I respect about The Juggalos; they don't give a dead rat's ass what we, who are not family, think about their activities.

There's someone I've not only heard of but have got a track by them! That I like! I'm still down with the kids! Whoop! Whoop!

I'm also cool with never ever knowing precisely why Prozak is the Hitchcock Of Hip Hop (is he even on the bill this year?)... some things should remain a mystery. Whoop Whoop!

Am a juggalo, will be down with the clown 'til I'm dead in the ground, can attest to this fundamental truth with my whole heart and soul. Keeping it scrubby and not giving a fuck is basically the whole deal.

Whoop whoop!

So basically Bonnaroo if you replaced the ICP wannabes with Mumford & Sons.

If you're a guy: anything that you might see a perp wearing on an episode of Cops.

If you're a gal: clothing is optional.

It's like a list of everybody who's nobody.

Yesssssss. Your palpable disdain is like vitamins to us.

"It's like Burning Man for rednecks."

Eh? ... Ehhh?

Last week I had some new juggalo-ish1 tattoos done (thanks to this awesome MeTa for the inspiration) and when I showed the artist a photo of what I wanted to get, the very first thing he asked me was, "So are you going to the Gathering?" Everyone always wants to know if I'm going to the Gathering! Every year! They never ask if I'm going to this show or that show or if I love or hate this album or that, but they always ask about GotJ.

I feel like the public's weird hatred of/morbid fascination with ICP et al. has always been VERY financially beneficial to the artists themselves (see also: the Hollywood Records saga), but when the internet era rolled around, the hatred/fascination morphed into the spawning grounds for what seems like billions of lazy, rubbernecking thinkpieces pitched by incompetent writers who have absolutely no idea what they're talking about. Contrary to the apparent goal of getting everyone together to point and laugh at weirdos, all these sad little content factories actually accomplished was turning the Gathering into what seems like a legit cultural touchstone. Thanks to them, GotJ is something the wider public is absolutely aware of, for better or worse; it's always been at the deep end of juggalo fandom, like Juggalo 301, but it's still the only thing a lot of people really know about us, other than the fact that the FBI considers us a gang. Bonus: We honestly don't give a fuck if all you do is point and laugh at us anyway, so feel free to get your ya-yas out if you're feeling so bad about yourself that you really need someone to feel superior to. J and Shaggs and the rest are like, "Thanks for the money, motherfuckers!"

In any case, I'm not a Gathering attendee, for much the same reasons I'm not an attendee of any other large-scale camping-intensive music festivals, but I trust that any/all MeFites who will be there this year -- you sent me MeMails, I know you're out there! -- will return with a full report. If you do nothing else, please go see Twiztid and pour at least a couple of 2-liters of pop over your head for me.

In closing, a fun fact: The woman in the OP GotJ infomercial is Violent J's wife, a/k/a Sugar Slam. The more you know! βΈ—πŸŒŸ

1they're actually Twiztid tattoos, but since almost no one knows who they are and almost everyone knows who ICP are, I'm just gonna go with "yeah, it's a juggalo thing"

That Lazlow Show link ("like Burning Man for rednecks) was fucking repulsive.
Not the Juggalos in it, the two guys who were mocking people.
That's the funny thing about this every year, ICP and the Juggalos and Juggalettes come out looking like the decent, accepting folk despite the rain of bottles we hear about.

The latest John Sandfor novel in the "Prey" series has huge chunks taking place at two Gatherings. Made the Juggalos seem like decent people.

Mr. Fig is going to The Gathering this year. I don't think he considers himself a Juggalo, but he wants to celebrate people being their weird-and-wonderful selves.

I am not going (my tolerance level for this thing is low, and I don't want my crabby mood spoiling his time), but I'm really interested in hearing stories when he comes back. I'll try to get him to post a write-up here.

Nathan Rabin on the 2015 Gathering of the Juggalos.#

That Juggalos for Jesus stuff... all adds to the mystery of just how much, if at all, a Christian band ICP are.
