Comic book artist Joe Phillips recently presented "Silver Screen Heroes", which places stars from the golden age of Hollywood into modern superhero roles.

I want to see him do one for The Uncanny X-Men (original 1963 lineup, of course) with Yul Brynner as Professor X and Vincent Price as Magneto.

(Steve McQueen as Cyclops, Paul Newman as Angel, Clint Walker as Beast, Peter Lorre as Toad, etc.)

OMG I would watch the hell out of these.

Interesting to think how so many of today's A-list actors routinely star in the kind of roles that would have been relegated to dirt cheap Saturday serials in Golden Age Hollywood. There used to be such a fear of getting typecast that no big star would take a role like Superman or Wonder Woman.

I want to go to the timeline where William Powell's Doctor Strange is a thing I can watch.

Who is this "Carole Lombart?"

Rosalind Russell as Lois Lane is (a) a fantastic idea that I would love and (b) funny to me because it seems like often when people are playing Lois Lane (particularly voice over artists), they are basically playing Russel's character from His Girl Friday.

Who is this "Carole Lombart?"

You know her, she was in that picture with Hedley Lamarr.

If the Liz Taylor Wonder Woman is anything like the original comics, there's no way it's getting past the Production Code.

Johnny Weissmuller for Aquaman! He was a gold-medal-winning swimmer!

Cyclops is too crap to be played by Steve McQueen.

I can see Danny Kaye making a great Joker if he was willing to go Robin Williams serious role with it.

Oh my God! I totally need to see Cary Grant as Batman and Katharine Hepburn as Catwoman. Make this happen now. I don't care if they're both long dead. MAKE IT FUCKING HAPPEN!

Yeah- Debbie Reynolds all the way.

I can see Jerry Lewis going serious and doing a nightmare-inducing Joker. (Of course, Jerry Lewis gives me nightmares generally.)

Who is this "Carole Lombart?"

Cousin of "Aquaman" star Ritta Hayworth, obviously.

I totally need to see Cary Grant as Batman

He will be the smoothest Bruce Wayne ever but the least intimidating Batman.

The Iron Man poster makes me uneasy in light of last week's Clark Gable story.

While most of these look great, what is wrong with Rita Hayworth's neck? Her head is so pasted-on-yay somehow.

Looks like an entry in The Line It Is Drawn.

You know, it just occurred to me, why do they need to cast the same actor as Bruce Wayne and Batman? All you see of Batman in his suit is his chin and eyes. Do a little makeup and Bob's your uncle. Or rather, Bob's your Batman.

Plus it would stop all that whining about 'everyone would recognise him', same for Superman.

These all repulse/creep me out. The sort of airbrushed/overly-made-up aesthetic of old movie posters doesn't mix well with modern superhero designs. Maybe if they'd done it with retro designs (which is why Dr. Strange and Aquaman work better than the others). As it is, the two styles clash horribly and it looks like, well, a clumsy mashup.

(Danny Kaye could never be Joker, no fucking way).

Yul Brynner would have have been a magnificent Lex Luthor, Professor X, etc, etc.

Just cast Conrad Veidt as the Joker and close the loop

Oh my God! I totally need to see Cary Grant as Batman

Give Clooney another shot at the cape now that he has all kinds of clout to make the production something non-awful and pitch it as To Catch a Thief (Remix) ft. Batman. BatClooney all playboying it up as Bruce Wayne on the French Riviera and sneaking around on terracotta rooftops at night! I'd watch that.
posted by jason_steakums at 4:45 PM on July 21, 2015

Sorry, Clooney, Iron Man and Pepper have that To Catch a Thief remix on lock.

I can buy Paltrow in the Grace Kelly role because Paltrow can successfully pull off quite a lot, but no way is RDJ Grant-like! Especially late period Thief/Northwest/Charade Grant. RDJ's only a year younger than Grant was in Thief but Grant came across as 50 year old man who can keep up, RDJ comes across as a man trying real hard to stay young, and owning it makes all the difference. That's why Clooney can do a pretty good Grant, he started leaning hard into that late-period Cary Grant shtick at about age 40.

How was Esther Williams not cast in Aquaman? I mean, I love Rita Hayworth as much as the next film devotee, but come on now...

I like these conceptually, but they weird me out in practice. There is something just -not right- about those faces.
posted by Biblio at 7:35 PM on July 21, 2015

It was the bodies for me, in some of them, and the costumes - too modern a sensibility. Those Gregory Peck abs!

I love this, but who would play Jean?? We need a Jean!

Cyclops is too crap to be played by Steve McQueen.

Oh, them's fightin' words. Now, I don't think Steve McQueen would be the best for Cyclops, necessarily. But not because Cyclops is crap, because he totally isn't and you should shut your face-hole. Maybe swap actors with Angel: Steve McQueen would be excellent as the dashing, confident Warren and Paul Newman would totally nail Scott's shy, awkward adorkableness.

Ooh, and how about The Fantastic Four? I haven't gotten much farther than Lee Marvin as The Thing and Peter Cushing as Dr. Doom, but I'm sure you folks can fill in the rest of the cast.

The Four Marx Brothers ARE The Justice League!
Groucho as Superman! Zeppo as the elegant Bruce Wayne and Batman!
Harpo as Aquaman, who can't speak through his snorkel!
Chico, as the Flash, does the famous, "flash, Flit, fish, flute, flush" routine with Aquaman during the big resuce of Margaraet Dumont as the Amazonian Wonder Woman!"

Battling the evil forces of Noah Beery as Darkseid and Sig Ruman as Brainiac!

Yeah, I got nuthin'.
