While she was certainly aware that she was an icon to the LGBT community, but hadn't realized that so many LGBT youths were being driven to the streets. It outraged her sense of justice and decency. She immediately agreed to help.

When we moved into our new rental house last Fall, my SO signed up for one of those super discounted cable + DVR. rental one year deals. Given that we now have access to a stupid amount of channels, she quickly discovered she could search for Golden Girls and record about two dozen episodes a week.
It's incredible how good that show was, and still is. I can't wait to share this article with her tomorrow.

Oh goodness. I wasn't expecting to be sitting crying at my computer after work tonight, but here I am.

And thank you, Bea. Homeless gay youth is one of the most heartbreaking things to me. That could have been me, if I hadn't waited until I moved out to come out.
The second link in the FPP has a donation link. I'm a bit strapped right now, but I get paid next Friday so I'm keeping this tab open to remind me to toss them some bucks in Bea's memory.

Also, I realize the cutting of cheesecake rather than a ribbon was mostly symbolic of her fictional character Dorothy Zbornak on The Golden Girls, but Bea Arthur herself hated cheesecake.

Yeah, I was initially going to go with "fucking fabulous" rather than "gayest", but adding "loveliest" is probably the most accurate.
