Annual Beer Float

Annual beer float in Helsinki, Finland. The event causes heartburn to bureaucrats as it doesn't have an organizer, no one applies for permits and it just kind of happens.

Beer floats don't just happen.

You start with some beer, and add a scoop of ice cream.

I do this in the pool sometimes, but it's a rather short trip with only a dog or two to look on. This looks better!

Ah, Finland. Where summer lasts for two weeks a year and everybody goes utterly bonkers.

Kaljakellunta

Stuff always sounds more romantic in Finnish.

They should do this in Calgary, another place with a great floating river just flowing right through it. Two such rivers, in fact. Oh, except Calgary has cops on boats whose sole purpose is to bust people with beer (and not wearing the appropriate flotation device).

Yeah this would give me heartburn too.

Ha! This is not unlike the feeling Canadians get when the merest first hint of anything not resembling cold weather occurs.

Looks like every 4th of July and Memorial Day in my neck of the woods.

This was all that was found. The rafts' passengers were never seen again. To this day no one knows their fates.

Surprisingly, less ice cream than I was expecting.

Ice cream in beer works great with a doppelbock!

It would go pretty well with the espresso stout I'm drinking right now, too.

Flashman when I lived there we used to do an annual float down the Elbow - and yes there was beer.

follow the Kerava River from the Vantaa districts of Tikkurila to Tammisto.

I can never decide if Finnish is a real language or an elaborate joke.

I know exactly one word of Finnish (pulla, which is a kind of spice bread thing and it is glorious), but try listening to Finnish being spoken on YouTube or something sometime. It's really amazingly beautiful to listen to.

For Finnish on YouTube, I highly recommend this beautiful insane thing (parody of a Finnish tragedy, with subtitles) from this previous post.

I feel confident you know at least two; kiosk is Finnish!

Wait; I'm wrong. I went to Finland and Turkey on the same trip once, and I am transposing language origin facts I learned on that trip. Carry on.
