The word 'Pajubá' mean 'gossip' or 'news'.

"Pajubá is one of the many queer anti-languages of the world. People study them in 'Lavender Linguistics'. It's hard to study those languages because their usefulness vanishes if they are not secret anymore. Pajubá is a moving target, evolving so rapidly that it can't be documented." — Pajubá: The secret language of Brazilian trans women [via mefi projects]

This is great. Muito bacana!

Anthropologist Richard Parker's book Bodies, Pleasures, Passions is good further reading for context.

This is a great piece, I just wish it was longer.

Anthropologist Richard Parker's book Bodies, Pleasures, Passions is good further reading for context.

Don Kulick's Travesti: Sex, Gender, and Culture among Brazilian Transgendered Prostitutes is good also.

Holy shit, that's so cool, thanks for posting, joseph conrad is fully awesome, and the podcasters too. I wrote the piece after trying in vain for some time to make a radio piece about Pajubá, but the travestis were very reluctant about giving me an interview. It was initially a zine, then Medium asked me to publish it.

One thing I didn't mention in the zine is that Pajubá is very funny, you can't help but constantly smile while listening to it. And it's very offensive to some people (they can't stand not understanding it). Some brothels ban it, and sex workers who accidentally slip on Pajubá at work are fined or fired.

I will be in New York in September for a bookfair, and the zine will be available there. Memail me for details if you're interested. Now off to listen to that podcast!
