Myster is a new cross-platform P2P file-sharing application. The project has some admirable goals and interesting assumptions: "Myster will always try to make practices that adversely affect the greater community negatively affect the user doing them." (via macintouch)

Yes, it's Java, and their idea of making it worth someone's while to host a lot of files is to write a client that displays an ad banner during the transfer.

They've recognized some important problems in this arena but I am not too excited about their solution.

Someone will eventually do it right.

Sounds a lot like OnShare, only less good.

Anyone remember OnShare? Anyone?

Didn't think so.

I swear, we could resurrect that company and do twice as well as we did back in 99-00. The problem with this space is that it's no good for making money...

Actually, if any of you did know of OnShare back when it was alive, I'd be interested in hearing what you thought about it...

The problem with this space is that it's no good for making money

Mr Gates would seem to think otherwise, having invested $51 million in Ray Ozzie's 'Groove' peer to peer tech. But then, perhaps Microsoft's intentions are more...malign.

Frustrating Java-Nonsense Crash Syndrome, though not as System-endangering as LimeWire. I hope.

Still, trying it out has alerted me to the fact that I have been as egregiously wrong about Godspeed You Black Emperor! as I was about Dead Can Dance in the 80s. A portion of my hard-earned will soon be heading GYBE!-wards.

So some good has come out of it, eh?
