Which emoji does each state use more than others?*

'I wonder why the eggplant is Nevada's most popular emoji.' 'The 22 states that are obsessed with food emoji.' 'No, these aren't each state's favorite emoji.' 'Swiftkey emoji study proves your apps are spying on your poop jokes.'

Without looking, the eggplant emoticon is a penis symbol, right?

Metafilter: πŸ’©

Oh good! I was hoping someone would post this so that we could collectively figure these out. I'm counting on you, Metafilter.

So, Alabama's elephant is obviously for the Crimson Tide. That's all I got. Maybe DC's snowman is because of federal snow days...?

Also, if you click on a state, it will show you more info about what other emojis it uses more/less than average. Besides the eggplant, Nevada also uses: πŸš• πŸ‘„ πŸ”‘ πŸ’» more than average, and "πŸ‘–" less than average. Subtle, Nevada.

Peaches and bathtubs - what is is about Minnesota?

I am gratified to know that Massachusetts, inventor of the Chocolate Chip cookie, uses it disproportionately in emoji form.

Even though the existence of this article has reminded me to look into how to permanently disable them on my phone.

This can't be accurate, there is no way that each state has a unique emoji that is preferred above all others. The odds of that happening are well, 1 in 50 I suppose. Never mind, I read the fine print.

πŸ’© is the only worthwhile emoji.

Buried the lede here, didn't we? Swiftkey is storing your keystrokes in such a way that you can recover your prefs when you get a new device. You can opt out, but jeez this is creepy. I'm surprised Google hasn't acquired them yet.

SwiftKey Cloud is actually opt-in, or at least it was when I installed it way back when.

Two of Wisconsin's top 5 emoji are empty boxes. I'll assume they used to contain beer and cheese.

You're right, tonycpsu. Makes it a lot less creepy.

terrapin, I'm just as confused as you are.... it's nice to know that the happy little pile of poo was in the running, though. For a while there, I had my ex-girlfriend convinced that it was actually an emoji for soft serve ice cream, and I still use it a ton.

Johnny Wallflower: "Swiftkey is storing your keystrokes in such a way that you can recover your prefs when you get a new device. You can opt out, but jeez this is creepy."

As Tonycpsu mentioned, this is opt-in. It's also explicitly stated ("Sync - Seamlessly get personalized learning across all your devices"), and it's the kind of opt-in which requires you to click a "Log In" button, and then click "Ok" to grant permission to view your profile, and then click "Ok" or "No" to personalize predictions based on sent mail. So it's not the kind of opt-in you can accidentally opt into by checking a setting you don't understand, it's the kind of opt-in that you have to jump through a few hoops to opt into - you really have to want to opt in.
