Let's Watch Some Bouldering Videos

Bouldering is a form of rock climbing without ropes or harness, generally over short, low routes with only a crash pad for protection. Watch Louis Parkinson, Sasha DiGiulian, and Chris Sharma do some amazing work.

Louis Parkinson is a London-based climber and coach.

Sasha DiGiulian is a professional climber, the current women's climbing world champion, and a student at Columbia. She's currently attempting to become the first woman to scale the Paciencia route on the north face of Mount Eiger, known as the "Wall Of Death."

Chris Sharma is one of the best climbers in the world and is notable for having been the first to climb many of the hardest routes in the world.

It's amazing, the things the human body is apparently capable of.

I love how some people are part spider monkey, with anti-gravity mods installed.

If you live in SF, Dogpatch Boulders is the best... home away from home
If you live in SF... not too many real boulders around. Indian Rock / Glen Canyon are minimal.

I want to check out spot #7 on this list.

"If you’re into rock climbing, bring your shoes and a crash pad because there is some great bouldering nearby. This is easily the kind of place where you could spend a day and not see another person. The signs at the main trailhead warn of mountain lions in the area, and the leftovers from a dinner of free-range venison back up the hype."

Kinda related - I just saw the movie Meru. If you're into climbing / adventure documentaries, it's amazing...

Ooo, bouldering videos! If you like watching competition/indoor videos, youtube user udini has made highlight videos for several years of international competitions, showcasing incredible athleticism and problem-solving. He's also put up neat videos of the German climbing team training. They look like they have fun (the last video is my favorite).

Watching Louis Parkinson almost made me feel as though I was not sitting at my desk but hopping around (apologies, bouldering) as well. That was awesome!

I could watch Mustang Wanted all day, just for the feeling of being glad I'm not him.

OK, everyone. I'm going to try to restrain myself here, but bouldering = love so it's hard for me.

Here's understated badass, Jimmy Webb's Vimeo channel. Here he is in Switzerland & France doing shit no one should be able to do.

Here's the incomparable wizard, Dave Graham, doing his thing (which usually involves lots of talking and also crushing large rocks with his fingers).

And Alex Puccio dominating. She hurt her knee real bad recently, but her instagram seems like proof that's not getting in her way.

Oh, and hey, Angie Payne! She did a wild trip to Greenland recently, which made for some amazing photos.

More: mythic Euro types, like Fred Nicole and Klem Loskot. Plus there's younger Euro crushers like Alex Megos, Jan Hojer, Anna Stöhr, and too many more to name. And Japanese legend Dai Koyamada. And American originals like John Sherman, and the original inspiration for the sport as we now know it, John Gill.

And all the people I forgot or just didn't get to. The rabbit hole goes very, very deep.

I've been bouldering for the past ten years or so. I'm no good at it, but it's the only exercise I do.
Besides ridiculous-looking forearms, the only other thing the sport has given me is a heightened tolerance for failure. There's something to be said for the process of working a route over and over and over again, of getting shut down, falling, and going at it until you get it done. And of course, the catharsis when the damn thing finally goes down.
That's why this is my favourite bouldering video.

This video of Jan Hojer playing on the campus board must have inspired dozens of pulley injuries.

And this one of Jimmy Webb learning to fly is pretty great. And he has a cute dog.
