Love Conway. I've spent years trying to understand just part of Winning Ways. And reading it might give some reflection of Conway's style. There are lots of places where he gives tables of, say, the 87 basic positions of the HotchPotch game. You realize that all the time you spend watching TV or commenting on websites, he's tearing through some math or game problem. It's intimidating.

I grew up reading Martin Gardner's Mathematical Games and writing programs to play the Game of Life. And thanks to this post, I have a birthday gift for my mathematician father sorted.
