Amazing. Even more amazing, she didn't win that competition. Viola Brand did. This is Viola Brand 4 years ago.

I didn't know there were that many ways to ride a bicycle.

She seems... kind of depressed at the end. Anybody know why?

Yeah, it's not just that she's good at this odd skill, it's that this odd skill is actually the basis for an entire sporting competition that I've never heard of.

I wonder how confused Google's self-driving cars would be coming across her...

Awww, hipster chick she's riding a fixie.

Backwards wheelie, woo!

Circus trick standing on the seat.

What? A jump to the handle bars?

Wait, the bike's upside down.

Oh that's gotta hurt.

Did pirouettes right on the center dot!

Amazing but she does need an amazing dismount.

Y'all need to brush up on your classics.

I wouldn't call it an "odd skill". There are whole industries built on "people doing amazing things on bicycles". The only thing that's odd about it is that those industries and competitions are usually overwhelmingly male. There's probably a really interesting story to be told here about gendered expectations and opportunities. From what I can see at first glance, this competition arose from gymnastics, which is of course heavily gendered female both in terms of expectations and participation.

There's a sport destined for The Ocho.

Good point clawsoon. It seems like there is "artistic cyling" (this video) vs "flatland BMX" and they are essentially two takes on the same sport.

i will never be that good at anything in my life. But now I have a new goal for my offsprings.

It could never happen here. She wasn't wearing a helmet.

That's amazing. It's one of those things that I just can't understand how it's possible. Not from a physics standpoint but just how and why someone gets into that and then gets that good at it.

Also nice post title but now that's in my head for a week.

I'm not sure where you all live, but once she stood the bike up on the back wheel and pedaled it backwards that looks like the way everybody rides their bike around here. It helps us be able to reach things on the top shelf.

Somewhere there is a man in a room with a button. Every day he has to decide whether to push that button, or not. If he does, the universe will wink out of existence and he will try to create a new and better one. Sometimes, he surfs the internet, and to be frank it's been a near thing for a couple of decades now whether he would push it based on the nonsense that the internet spews out. Usually it's better if he stays offline, chances-of-continued-existence-wise, but it was cloudy today.

Sp at least for today, this link is the reason the emperor of all things has decided not to destroy the world.

Well, it's an established sport, so that probably helps.

I wonder if the bike has special design features that make it easier or safer to do certain stunts.

1/1 gear ratio with a fixed gear, and a very stiff and sturdy headset for starters

Oh I get that, but I think the same of a lot of established sports. Especially when something seems so unnatural or dangerous to me I have to stop and think "there had to be a first time that person tried that." The ski jump is another example. Also, someone did this before it was an established sport so how? why? That's what I am wondering. That's what I like about this kind of thing. Someone else thought "Why? Why not? How? I don't know but I'll figure it out."

With ski jumping you can gradually increase the size of the ramp. Similarly, you can start with a tiny bicycle.

Circuses, probably.

Lilly Yokoi, ballerina on bicycle, 1965

In case anyone missed it, the ballerina in the above video is executing bicycle riding tricks very similar to those performed by the woman in the FPP video, but she does them while wearing high heels.

FML, I will never have this much balance or skill.

If you are a ballerina, are high heels like training wheels to you?

There is a lovely FP POV vid of a young girl taking the 60' ski jump for the first time. Talks herself into it, despite blind fear. Aces it. P'raps someone has a link…
