Latest in GMOs: glow in the dark chickens

Bioelectric chickens fighting bird flu I cannot find the words to respond to this factoid.
Other than wise woman Clover once said, "Just because they can do it, doesn't mean they should".
This post was deleted for the following reason: Heya, this the glow-in-the-dark genetics stuff is neat and interesting but this is maybe a little too thin pop science reporting to be great for a post. -- cortex
The decoy gene is injected into the chicken chromosome alongside the fluorescent protein that makes the birds glow under ultraviolet light,
article, can you put this into terms i can understand?
similar to glow-in-the-dark posters in college dorm rooms.
ah good thank you

the glow in the dark characteristic is just to identify them from normal chickens in the study.
It doesn't have anything to do with the flu resistance aspect of the GM and won't be used if the flu resistant chickens are commercially mass produced

Yeah, the glow is just a useful marker for the scientists doing the experiment, to make sure the gene injection works. It's pretty standard when making transgenic (i.e. GM) organisms in research.

Absurdly anti-intellectual pandering, fear mongering bullshit. Green fluorescent protein labeling has been an invaluable tool in the biology lab for decades now. But, by all means, if it's funny and vaguely unsettling when taken out of context, that's more important.
Seriously though, GFP becoming something that laypeople are upset about and getting added to the laundry list of absurd reasons that projects can't get funded... it wouldn't surprise me, but it is deeply upsetting.

it's a scientific fact that glow in the dark chickens are funny in any context
