David Ortiz, Boston Red Sox baseball player who (in)famously spoke for the city of Boston(NSFW) in the wake of the 2013 marathon bombing, just hit the 500th home run of his career, becoming just the 27th player to reach the mark.

The Sox have had a bunch of fun players to root for over the past 10 or 12 years, but I'd trade them all for David Ortiz. Thanks for everything, Big Papi, and I hope the new management can pull together one last run before you hang up the spikes. Sorry I thought you were washed up a couple of years ago, but glad you proved me wrong.

Ortiz is the best. He's been my favorite since he first joined the Red Sox. My own mythological version of his history with the team is that he replaced Carl Everett (their previous DH, who was a jerk and an evolution-denier and just all around a downer), at a time when their clubhouse morale was in the toilet, they had been talking about tearing down Fenway, etc. Then Ortiz came, and he was this nice dude who would hug other players and they would be like ?? ...and then eventually through the power of Ortiz, they were all like *v* and the clubhouse turned around and they all encouraged each other to victory and they all lived happily ever after. I claim my spot in the front seat of the Ortiz bandwagon forever. Hall of Fame or gtfo.

He got the name "Papi" because he didn't know anyone's name on the Red Sox, so he just called everyone Papi, and they assumed he was following the Golden Rule, so they started calling him Papi in return.

Nice that Don Orsillo, whose ambition in life was to be the Red Sox play-by-play announcer, got to call #500 before he gets kicked out of the booth by management. And how classy that he didn't say anything for a minute and a half, letting the emotion of the moment (including Ortiz's teammates all running in from the bullpen) speak for itself.

I'm a Mets fan. But Big Papi is a great player. Although if you say I admitted it I'll deny it.

DH home runs should be in a separate category. Just like those hit in the home run derby.

Sure, and while we're at it, NFL quarterbacks who don't play on defense should have a separate category for their touchdowns, because they're not complete players!

I grew up in an NL city, so I used to hate the DH, but I've come around to wanting to see it brought over to the NL. Outside of a few marginal cases like Mike Hampton or Bartolo Colon, there is nothing entertaining about watching a pitcher hit. The chess match aspect of double switches are only occasionally important in a game, and it seems like far more often a pitcher who's throwing the ball well has to be taken out for a pinch hitter because his team is down by a run late.

“All I can tell you is, I was using what everybody was using at the time,’’ Ortiz said. “It’s not like I was picky about it.’’

It's going to be hilarious when David Ortiz and Andy Pettitte get into the hall of fame despite steroid use while Bonds and Clemens are still sitting in the naughty corner.
