That was a great read; thank you!

Okay, so... I was involved in some nonsense negotiation some about five years back, and I told the person on the other end of this negotiation that I would agree to the deal if she could guarantee me cocktails with Helen Mirren (who was tangentially involved in this, but very tangentially). I was joking.

Some weeks later, I got an invitation from this person I had been negotiating with to a very small screening of a thing with cocktails beforehand... with Helen Mirren. Holy shit. I went, saw Helen Mirren about ten feet away from me and was about to go up to her but then this old lady with awesome bangs showed up right in front of me and said, "I need a beer." Somebody else said, "Queensissy, this is Keely. Keely, Queensissy." And I decided to chat a bit with Keely Smith instead. She was ... oh man, she was Keely Smith.

A person with real skills could have gotten these two ladies together and had the most amazing time in the whole world ever, but I'm not that person. I do not regret my time with Keely Smith for one second, obviously. Hopefully I will have another chance to have cocktails with Helen Mirren.

Mirren, who doesn’t bother to call herself a feminist (because “it’s just fucking obvious”)

Love it. Especially in light to the mouldy tripe I was just reading by a female journalist of some longevity who said of the new Prime Minister's announcement that women must be respected, that he had "drunk the feminist Kool-Aid."

It's just fucking obvious is my new go-to explanation of why I am a feminist.

Helen Mirren is amazing. I love her as an actor and I love her interviews.

It's just fucking obvious is my new go-to explanation of why I am a feminist. I agree wholeheartedly.

I love Helen Mirren! We're in the middle of re-watching Prime Suspect and she's just such a great actor. The character drinks, smokes, swears, is a workaholic who has an abortion and an affair with a married man and throws wine over her superiors when they make a derogatory sexual remark about her, and in the hands of someone else she could have been a victim or a villain. Instead she's just so wonderfully real. These are things real women do, not caricatures of femininity. You just can't take your eyes off her, and it's nothing to do with her looks but her presence. I want to be her when I grow up. Thanks for the post.

"L’Oréal’s own research shows that half of women over 50 feel overlooked"
Really? Where are they finding that other half?

I have always, always loved Helen Mirren, but she's one of those people I love EVEN MORE almost every time she opens her mouth.

Good interview with a wonderful woman, but really?

Projects the interview subject have recently been working on, and is mentioned in the text, is regularly called out at the end of the interviews. I don't really see why this is different from, say, a film or a record?

GOD I just -

Every time I hear/read an interview with Helen Mirren I just say "yaaaaaassssss girl" all the way through and attract way too attention to myself. I mean look at this:

“The great thing that happens as you age is that you don’t really give a flying fuck. I don’t look so good, but I don’t care.”

How is anyone's reaction ANYTHING other than handing her all the goddamn awards

If ever a sentiment called for a blink or marquee tag exception, this would be the one.

She really is amazing. She didn't come onto my radar until Prime Suspect and I've loved her since. I feel I really need to look up her earlier work.
