You're saying "Khaleesi" wrong.

Hearing that guy talk about the languages he created for Game of Thrones was the first time I took interest in the show.

Actually, he says that he made the wrong assumption when he tackled the word "Khaleesi." He tried to mess as little as possible with GRRM's original spelling, so he reasoned that the "ee" and "i" represented different sounds. Now he feels he should have kept the sounds and regularized the spelling.

Also, he's a big fan of Emila Clarke, and is won over to however she pronounces things...

Many babies (and more to come, no doubt) are sure to have an interest in this.

Please don't name your kids Khaleesi. Her name is Daenerys. Name your kids Daenerys.

Eh, I'm okay with it. I mean, there aren't really any other memorable Khaleesis in the books or show (so far), so Daenerys is the one you think of anyway. Plus we already use real-world titles for personal names (Duke, Earl, Rex, Regina, etc). I can't think of an angle that would make naming your daughter Khaleesi unacceptable without also preventing you from calling her Daenerys.

I'm only a semi-trained linguist at best (I minored in linguistics because my university didn't offer a major), but this kind of thing is one of my absolute dream jobs. I keep meaning to hover around fantasy and science fiction writing groups looking for people who might need help with languages.

I named my kid Daenerys. My kid has four paws and purrs.

Reminds me of Victoria Fromkin, a linguist from UCLA who, among other things, was recruited to develop a vocabulary and syntax for, of all things, the small monkey-like Pakuni from the 70s kids sci-fi show, Land of the Lost.

Shouldn't this be combined with the previous post about dead crows?

Mr. Bad Example: David Peterson has called out to fantasy/SF authors that they should hire conlangers (like you?), so hang in there!

One concrete place to look: every few months someone looking for a language to be made for them posts it at the LCS jobs board (forgive the self-link -- I'm an LCS boardmember & did reviewing for Dothraki when it went through them).

My partner works in the birthing field and naming your kid after the Khaleesi is a thing here in Canada as well. She's also seen people name their kids Daenerys, Dany, Emilia, and of course Tyrion when the show is on. She's always amazed that people like the Khaleesi as much as they do - she doesn't think she's necessarily the best role model and who knows where her storyline is going in the books or the show. We might see some Atticus-like reactions in the years to come.
