This is amazing and wonderful. Props to her for nearly keeping up with the lyrics for "Guns and Ships"; it's very fast.

My only wish was that the HERCULES MULLIGAN! video was slightly more badass. Because, I mean, come on, HERCULES MULLIGAN!

damayanti, don't know if you saw this, but they did a Guns & Ships singalong the other night.

This just makes me all the more keenly aware that I have been doing an awful lot of car singalongs to Hamilton, and that surely makes me look like a weirdo to anyone who happens to be looking at me while I'm, like, rapping along to Cabinet Battle #1.

These were hit or miss for me, but I legit choked on my beer laughing when I got to the Chipotle one. The MTA one is also pretty great.

As someone who has been telling strangers as I walk down the street with headphones that I'm not going to give away my shot every morning, I feel your pain.

This is still less weird than just shouting HERCULES MULLIGAN and LAFEYETTE completely out of nowhere, which I'm also very fond of doing.

Also crying about a 200 year comma.

I have a lot of Hamilton feelings.

I don't expect to be able to see Hamilton before this summer, so I'm on a strict regimen of listening to the cast recording every day or two to build up a tolerance, with the goal of reducing helpless sobbing by at least 10%.

While we're all here sharing our Hamilton feelings once again, because we're non-stop, can someone explain to me the difference between "My dearest Angelica" and "My dearest, Angelica" for me? Because I'm not a genius polymath and I'm still not seeing what's the big deal. Either way he's super fond of you, lady!
posted by jenfullmoon at 10:32 PM on October 12, 2015

"My dearest Angelica" = totally innocuous way to refer to a sister-in-law of whom one is fond
"My dearest, Angelica" = Angelica is #1 in my heart, which is a super racy thing to say given the context

posted by Ned G at 3:36 AM on October 13, 2015 [1 favorite]

Ocherdraco has it, but if it's unclear, the comma implies "(You are) My dearest, Angelica." That's some A-plus flirtation!

Forgiveness, can you imagine?

Popped into my head and made me audibly cry-gasp at the grocery store. Glad to know I might not be alone.

The real letter Hamilton wrote Angelica had "ma chere, soeur" -- "my dear, sister," which reads with the comma as oddly in French as it does in English, but it definitely has that nuance of calling her "my dear," not just "my dear sister."

(The amount of actual history in this musical is remarkable, down to Angelica having written to Eliza, "If you were as generous as the old Romans you would lend him to me for a little while" - that is to say, "I'm just saying, if you really loved me you would share him.")
posted by Jeanne at 7:07 AM on October 13, 2015 [10 favorites]

Just to add on to ocherdraco's explanation my take was that the comma changes "dearest" from an adjective to a noun. So "my dearest sister" would mean Hamilton is addressing his sister (in-law) who is dearest to him. "My dearest, sister" means Hamilton is addressing his dearest (who also happens to be his sister-in-law). The latter implies a more ardent degree of affection (and, ya know, infidelity). I think the grammar is the same in the original French text from the letter?

Sure it's a bit of a silly thing to obsess over but since when is romance reasonable? Especially when a handwritten letter is the only word you might have from someone for weeks when it takes at least 2-3 months for people or mail to cross the Atlantic.

Thank god it's not just me. I had "Guns and Ships" blasting when I pulled into the gas station yesterday while rapping along (I've just about got it up to speed after much practice) super loudly, and I couldn't tell if the guy in the next car was grinning at me as if to say "YES, I LOVE HAMILTON TOO" (probably not) or "Oh Jesus, middle-aged white broads should not do that, at all, ever" (probably so).

Thank god for this thread, though, because although I have harangued like everyone in my workplace (many of whom are young ostensibly vibrant college students) about the need for them to listen to Hamilton immediately, NOBODY HAS. Nobody has even heard of it before I mention it. They're all "Oh, right, yeah, you recommended that, but it was such a busy weekend." Aaaaargh, for god's sake, we all went into the line of work we do here because we supposedly love art and literature and culture and shit with every fiber of our being, but I'm the only person who ever seems to read or hear or watch any. So I have no one, no one at all with whom to share my many many many EMOTIONS about this show.

Ain't no power like an utterly obsessed fandom.

Related, I realized this morning that it's a good thing that I don't have any weddings to attend on my calendar because there's no way I wouldn't be able to respond to any toast with:

To the groom! To the groom! To the groom! To the groom!

To the bride! To the bride! To the bride! To the bride!

And given the context, that'd be sort of rude.

Beyonce and Jay Z's visit to Broadway hit musical 'Hamilton' may be about more than pleasure

The power couple’s visit to the hip-hop-infused musical on Wednesday night could be about more than pleasure — it could be research.

Atlantic Records, which released the original cast album of the show about founding father Alexander Hamilton, is pursuing an EP of singles from the show featuring pop, rap and hip-hop artists.

Like Bey and Jay, Missy Elliott and Pharrell have also checked out Lin-Manuel Miranda’s smash hit.

Bold mine and implying something about Missy that the article doesn't really imply, but fingers SO crossed.
