There is a famous image of two black American sprinters, John Carlos and Tommie Smith, bravely using the podium at the 1968 Summer Olympics as a platform to make a powerful statement about racial inequality and human rights. Also on the podium is white Australian sprinter Peter Norman, who looks at a glance to be present in that moment of history purely through the accident of running 200m in 20.06 seconds. But there's more to the story than that.
