The 1st World Indigenous Games

Sandwiched between Brazil’s hosting of the 2014 soccer World Cup and the Olympic Games next summer in Rio de Janeiro, the Indigenous Games are being advertised as a low-budget, low-key alternative to the marketing-hyped and TV-driven sports culture of the 21st century.
This is really the first? I could have sworn I'd heard of this before, from a native Alaskan (I think it was) who was demonstrating this really cool Alaskan sport of jumping super duper high.

Ah, it appears Al Jazeera is illustrating this with an image of Maori haka. I do so enjoy a good haka. %-P

(Or I'm being culturally insensitive, and there are other groups who intimidate by sticking out their tongues.)

Other Pacific Island nations also perform haka, yes. That image looks Maori to me, but I wouldn't definitively say it is. There's certainly a Maori group at the games.

Of course it's low-budget and low-key, they'd never give big money and publicity to anything indigenous.
