Ginger... iMac... Yahoo?

Ginger... iMac... Yahoo? It looks like Yahoo! is taking a page from Steve Jobs's book, promising something that's 'so big there's never been anything like it on the Internet, or anywhere else.' Liftoff is 1 PM Pacific Time on Wednesday which, incidentally, is just after trading closes at NASDAQ.

It's nothing special. Really. All Yahoo! is going to introduce is what they promise to be the "Biggest Sale in Internet History."

Their ad in the April 2002 YIL explains it all:

Even if it's twice as big as Ginger and iMac it's going to change the world in ways we can barely discern (if at all). I'm sorry, but shit like this trips my hype-o-meter. Vague or excessive advertising is, without fail, the mark of a product that is at best unremarkable and at worst a con.

You know what I'd like them to have in their sale? An ad-Free yahoo. That includes banner ads, interstitials in the groups service, skyscrapers, pop-ups... I will give you money, just turn the damn things off.

That's fine, I won't be buying from them or any of their shops anyway, precisely because of the Mac issue. I understand that as a Mac owner, I shouldn't expect to have access to 100% of the features Yahoo offers Windows users. But their near-total unwillingness to develop ANY of their Windows products for the Mac is just too damn much. I mean, when Yahoo Messenger is at version 5.0 for Windows and version 1.1 for the Mac, something is very very wrong.

I'll use their email, I'll very occasionally use their main directory (Google is usually just better), as both are free and work more or less the same on all platforms. But anything off which they might make actual money? Forget it. They can have my banner ad hits, and that's it.
