You'd think given all the attention to fancy pony feature requests in MetaTalk.... ;- )

Poor guy. Never paid attention to him when the DJs would namedrop Sparklehorse on KCRW.

Turns out Linkous wrote one of my favorite Cracker songs and then re-recorded it himself.

I had no idea Cracker had a version of "Sick of Goodbyes!"

Sparklehorse was so wonderful, and released several of my very favorite songs. I would have missed this article and am looking forward to reading it. Thanks for posting.

Ok I totally read that as Sparklelord and got really confused for a second.

The transition from noise into clarity in "Chaos of the Galaxy / Happy Man" is one of those bits of music that makes my brain dump all of its happy chemicals straight into my reward center.

That and the "welll shityeah!" at the beginning of Rainmaker

There's this part in 'Spirit Ditch' where he plays a voicemail from his mom in the middle and it always gets me.

I am not one, really, to get song lyrics tattooed on my body (just other things) but I have constantly considered getting the words "dogs will wag their tails and birds will sing/hell, it's a hard world for little things" from "Ghost of His Smile" on my body.

I loved -- and love -- Mark Linkous' work so much. It spoke to me on a level so few other artists' work have -- his music had a quality that I wouldn't really call "dreamlike" or "surreal" but there was something about it that seemed to reveal this personal mythology. He dealt with specific symbols and things that were important to him and so many of those things were so close to the things in my head. It's hard to explain, but his appreciation for the natural world and the cycle of things wasn't spiritual but still beautiful. I don't think that's expressed enough. ("Marigold" is a good example of what I'm talking about. I love that "all of our tomorrows/will be yesterdays again.")

Sparklehorse got me through some really dark times and I really appreciate that, but it's only been recently I've been able to go back to it. I'm glad I can come back to it at a time where I no longer "need" it -- there was seriously a period where I only listened to Sparklehorse.

Linkous' suicide was kind of a wake-up call for me in a lot of ways. Here was this person I related to so much and it scared me that he wasn't able to conquer the dark things in his heart. I saw how that could all too easily be my future and I knew I didn't want to end up in that place.

(Every now and then, I will look up videos of Sparklehorse and Mark Linkous interviews on YouTube. I am doing this less and less but ... I still do it.)

For a while, I was trying to collect EVERYTHING Mark Linkous played on or produced. I came pretty close, but there are still some gaps.

I was surprised to read in this that his next album wasn't nearly done. Before his death, I felt like I read so many things that said "it's almost ready!" But in some ways, that's OK -- I don't think I'd want to hear it anyway.

(I also find it strange -- but understandable -- his estate didn't want the tribute album to happen.)

I'm glad this got written. I was glad to read it, even if it made me sad for a lot of reasons. I think his music is worth (re)discovering. I still hate we'll have no more music from him but I will remain grateful for what he left us.

I saw them in college and unfortunately all I remember is that Mark was really, really drunk. I mean, I LOVED Sparklehorse and was thrilled to see them live, but it was so sad.
