Rap. Franco Arabic. Paris.

Wow, I'm shocked they don't mention the biggest French-Arab rapper, La Fouine. Is there a reason for that? Is he out of favor?

La Fouine doesn't strike me as someone very political - I could be wrong. But I could be wrong.

In any event it's interesting to hear from Akhenaton as he and IAM had, IMO, their best music in another era : the pre 9/11 world, when rappers, arabic or otherwise, were mostly concerned with social stuff, gangster stuff from the projects (lots of Wu Tang influences).

To celebrate Malcolm X’s birthday, and to raise funds for a forthcoming publication about him, 11 Arab Muslim MCs gather together for a night titled Who Is Malcolm X at Le Bataclan
Now this is amusing. Of the 11 rappers who played at the Bataclan, only one has Arab roots (Médine's family is from Algeria). The others are from Francophone subsaharan Africa or from the Caribbean: Kery James (Haiti), Casey (Martinique), Lino (Congo), Youssoupha (Congo), Faada Freddy (Senegal), Imany (Comoros), Disiz (Senegal/Belgium), Shone (Burkina Faso), Tiers Monde (Senegal) and Mac Tyer (Cameroon). The 3 other musicians cited in the article are of European descent: Akhenaton (Italy), Nekfeu (Greece), Fauve (Switzerland). This doesn't invalidate what Médine and Akhenaton say in the article, but I wish that the US/UK media would be a little more accurate in their portrayal of immigration in France.
