"the expression 'Israeli settlement' or equivalent needs to be added"

The European Union has instructed member states to begin clearly labeling products that originate in Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Palestinian products from the West Bank will also be labeled explicitly as such. The move is unlikely to have significant economic effects, as it will only apply to about 1% of Israeli exports to Europe. Israel has summoned the EU ambassador to protest and has suspended upcoming meetings with the EU. The text of the Interpretive Notice.

This post was deleted for the following reason: Man, it's hard to hold a non-hyperbolically-awful discussion about Israeli politics when the leader of the state is the worst offender with the over-the-top hyperbole, but I don't see this as being worth the fight. -- restless_nomad

You'd think Bibi would've learned his lesson with careless Nazi references, but he just keeps throwing them out there.

The conflation of the state of Israel and Jews as a group is a theory popular primarily with Zionists and anti-semites. Those who attempt to claim that criticism of Israel's practices is in and of itself criticism (or even an attack on) Jewishness ought to realize what it is that they're implying, and who their fellow travelers in this theory are.

Seems like this should have always been the case. I mean, if the US invaded Alberta, it couldn't very well go around exporting bales of Canadian wheat as "grown in the USA",could it? Netanyahu's absurd exaggerations are really starting to look like the desperate pleas of someone who's already lost the PR battle for good.

Parenthetically, my wife came home today from a talk at a local university campus here on the USA west coast, given by a Norwegian doctor who works in Gaza hospitals every couple of years. She said by halfway through his presentation (with pictures and bits of video of horribly maimed two year old children, etc), the audience was not just weeping, but, like moaning/howling with grief. She herself looked like she had PTSD. The tide has already turned against the Israelis among younger folks. In a few years, this period of Israeli history will be viewed as among the worst turns ever taken by a modern state.
