Marvel Comics’ secret weapon is a woman named Sana Amanat

Amanat's editing résumé includes some of Marvel's most instrumental and inventive titles: Hawkeye (writer Matt Fraction and artist David Aja) presented a witty and crucial resurgence for the character; Ms. Marvel (Wilson and Alphona) is the crown jewel of Amanat's career and Marvel's wondrous hit; and Captain Marvel (DeConnick and artist Dexter Soy) became the pioneer of what's become a golden age for the woman superhero.

I saw her at NYCC, including at the panel mentioned in the article. She's a very funny, interesting speaker.

With all the negative, hateful buzz out there in fandom about women, I'm very glad to read this article, and I'm even happier to share it with my audience on Facebook. Such a great story, and one that I hope a lot of women will take to heart, form strong communities and mentorships and get wonderful work done.

Thank you for this!

It's nice seeing women but it's even nicer seeing a Pakistani woman (or at least of Pakistani origin) doing this. May there be many, many actual people born and bred outside North America, Europe and Australia / New Zealand doing such work. I wasn't a comic reader as a child, but I was a fantasy /science fiction reader so it's really lovely to see the Sana Amanats, the Mahvesh Murads etc.

Captain Marvel, the first (and only) solo female superhero film on the schedule, has been pushed back to make room for the upcoming Spider-Man movie and the Ant-Man sequel.

For the MCU and women? No they haven't. A couple of the movies have been decent on supporting women characters (the first Thor movie and maybe Cap 2), and the second Avengers movie managed to have two female superheroes and not kill off either of them, but the MCU has for the most part been typical Hollywood broland, in casting and plot.
