Not sure how I would react if I reached down to grab a box of brownies and instead got a fistful of fur and claws.

I like the "Little Bites" cat. She looks like she has it all sorted out.

I want to hang out with this little guy. Or this one.

Also, light bulbs are nice and toasty.

I'm finding the Instagram layout easier to browse. Also I will buy this cat in bulk.

Also this cat appears to have some physical abnormalities like dog ears and dog paws and a dog face but is nevertheless a very good cat.

I love bodega cats, though I just love the idea of a cat that works for a living (he said as he glared at his lazy, good-for-nothing adorable fluff ball sprawled out on the couch).

There's a cat at the bodega around the corner from my apartment, and he will every once in a while come by and just sit in front of our front window and stare. Which of course drives our cat nuts.

How do stores that sell food and have cats running around not violate local health codes?
posted by Going To Maine at 10:09 AM on December 6, 2015

In NYC they used up all their available health codes on rats. 🐀🐀🐀

In NYC, bodega cats are technically against the health code but they're mostly overlooked because they keep vermin away, which are way worse. You do hear about bodega owners getting fined periodically, but most bodegas have cats anyway.

This cat is like, just try buying these, friendo. These are my cat birthright.

To follow up on Itaxpica's comment, other forms of vermin control (like traps and poison) tend to leave little corpses rotting behind large, hard-to-move refrigerators. Some customers might not like cats, but I'll bet they really don't like the smell of rotting flesh An added bonus is that some cats like to eat cockroaches too (I know mine does).

And I know a lot of New Yorkers who have developed close relationships with their local bodega cat.

I wish my local store had cats hiding among the potato chips to dissuade me from grabbing some. (Or going for the cat instead of the chips).

Indeed. Just throw in the cat and I'd be set.

There was a corner store in my home town we didn't shop at any more after my mom walked in one fine day and found the store cat lounging about in the cold cuts.

I always feel better about a bodega with a cat.

I was all this is the best thing ever! until I saw the one sitting inside a laundromat dryer, and now I need therapy.
