I think Rowling's Wizarding World is a very rich vein for whole anthologies to be developed in. Definitely looking forward to seeing more what the US WW is like (at least at that period).

Yeah, between this and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, the Harry Potter engine continues.

Yes and no for me? It's probably heresy but while I did wonder about American magical schools and systems, I am bizarrely indifferent to it. But man, Eddie Redmayne is every-damn-where these days.

I swear to God it feels like this movie has been in production for about five years now.

Is there a term for that thing at the beginning of every damn trailer these days where there's a moment of silence, and then... THUMP?

I always thought "Scamander" was pronounced with the accent on the first syllable, but apparently I was wrong.

I wasn't expecting to be as excited as I am. I think I'm mostly really looking forward to learning more about the wizarding world. And that sense of going into it without knowing how it's going to end, which I never had with the first 8 movies.

Is this going to be more than 1 movie ? I like the idea, but please no multiple-movie storylines.

J.K. Rowling never needs to work another day in her life. Instead she is going to keep producing this world that we love and refusing to dodge taxes on the profits while donating the proceeds to charity.

I don't know why everyone always praises Steve Jobs and he gets all these dumb biopics. That guy was an asshole. J. K. Rowling is my hero.

It is a curious thing, Harry, but perhaps those who are best suited to power are those who have never sought it.

It almost makes up for the Star Trek Beyond trailer.

If Rowling's world becomes a curated shared universe, I wouldn't object.

It's funny how after book 7 Rowling gave a bunch of interviews saying that she wouldn't ever write any more Harry Potter (save an encyclopedia of unpublished material for charity), or anything else in the fantasy genre.

I'm glad she came back to this world but I wonder what changed her mind. Honestly, I think she really struggled with the pressure and constant attention that the books brought (as anyone would). But she seems a lot more comfortable with it now.

Based in that stylized American eagle symbol in that shadowy concuil I'm kinda hoping the American magical authority is like, all Masonic-y and Proto-fascist and weird and not cuddly and Dickensian at all.

Kind of like how the American equivalent to the UK's magical defense force in the Laundry books is a bone chilling blood magic cabal obsessed with mind control.

I wonder if she'll capitulate and ever wrote another Potterverse book or whether it will turn into an ever-expanding multimedia empire like the next Star Wars or something.

It feels weird to have that story gated behind London play tickets.

I think it mostly feels expensive.

Rowling’s Tales of Beedle the Bard was once gated on there are only seven copies in the whole world.

I read some fanfic about this stuff a while ago, but I have to wonder, 1930's New York, how are they going to handle race? If races were always equal in the American Wizarding world, what was going on during slavery? Did they just erase the memory of everyone who knew the Black wizard and tell them to never contact their family again? Are there Native American wizarding traditions? Did wizards fight in the Civil War or the Indian Wars? Did they obtain independence from the Ministry of Magic in 1783 or was it before or after? Was there a nasty war involved? (Using the term wizard for all genders here, if there is a better one, please tell me.)

The nasty parts of British history are easily enough skipped past (mostly, I wonder what the status of Irish Wizards was during the troubles?) in terms of large wars in the country, but the history of the US is messier later than the UK. Unless all wizards are banned from marrying anyone but wizards or minority wizards were not allowed wands until recently, there were always going to be people they cared about who were discriminated against.

Also, am I remembering things correctly that there is a Salem Institute? I know we hanged a bunch of people there 350 years ago, but honestly, wouldn't somewhere like New Orleans be better?

A Salem Witches Institute was mentioned in Goblet of Fire - a group of spectators at the Quidditch World Cup came from there. But there's no more detail about them or whether it even is a school.

J. K. Rowling has said that the magical education system in the US draws a lot from Indigenous culture and beliefs.

I am also curious to know how they'd deal with race - I actually applied to audition for this movie and I made a note about how during the timeframe of this movie, there was a wave of immigration of South Asians into the US, and they were making quite an impact on local society, therefore casting me would still be historically accurate. No response, sadly.

The person who plays the MACUSA leader in the gold headdress is Carmen Ejogo, who is half Black half Scottish, so apparently the magical world got their Black and Female President long before the no-majs did.

Hactar - Wizard or witch seems correct in canon usage, but there's a chunk of the fandom (especially on tumblr) that likes to use wix or wixen for reasons I only vaguely understand but I guess related to gender?

As for fanon about American wizards there was a lot of discussion about that in this fun Metafilter thread about fan worldbuilding in Rowling's universe.
