Saddam Hussein, the guy who just keeps on giving. Guardian link.

For some reason, this story reminds me of the the plot of Captain Corelli's Mandolin.

Saddam loves children's theatre; Hitler loved the circus. Coincidence?

Great... while his people starve Saddam spends money much needed by his country to try and garner good publicity from left-wing rags like The Guardian.

I'm not sure that article was written with the intention of providing good publicity. That said, my opinion on the guy has changed entirely after reading it. He's clearly just misunderstood.

How can someone who looks this good in a homburg be bad?

And last year he gave $95m to the poor in the US. Though it's unclear how far past press release that project actually progressed. Just an all around humanitarian, the man is.

I don't see why this is so amazing. Saddam has never actually said that he's at war with the whole West. He just doesn't believe in the whole 'USA policing the world' thing.

What's wrong with him building weapons of mass destruction (if he is)? America has them. The UK has them. India has them. I don't see the US threatening to send 'inspectors' into the UK or India.

Frankly, a few factions in the West see fit to bully Saddam (whether that's right or wrong is not for me to judge) and just because he's been an evil little sod in the past doesn't mean that he's totally anti-humanitarian. (Note: Turkey also committed atrocities against the Kurds, no-one in the Middle East 'wants' them.)

So, bravo to Saddam. He's not really a man to look up to here in the West, but it shows he's not a totally evil bastard (kinda like the mass murderers who paint beautiful pictures while on Death Row).

Huh. I kinda thought the mass murderers who paint beautiful pictures while on death row were totally evil bastards.

I want to read the romance novel he wrote. I bet that is interesting.

The thing that's wrong with Sadaam Hussain is that he's the only person since 1945 to use Chemical weapons on his own people. That's just not cricket.

Jonmc: I have a feeling Mao liked puppet theatre. Stalin was into shagging ballerinas though. He must be the exception that proves the rule. Tony Blair must have stated that "look, I have profound admiration for Harry Potter" by now too. Odds on Bush and Bob the Builder anyone?
