Jimmy Diresta has a youtube channel where he posts timelapse videos of him making stuff, like a kitchen knife, a fireman's axe, a dagger, a leather compact case, a business sign, and a distillery model.

It grows back. Although it may rate-limit his output.

Hey cool! I've been obsessed with this guy for a month or so, ever since I learned about him in an AskMe question and I was thinking about putting together a post about him. Now I don't have to!

He reminds me a bit of Adam Savage in that it seems like he just automatically knows what needs to be done to make anything at all. Sure, the planning and thinking about a project is not getting shown in the video, but he sure makes things look effortless.

This tool cabinet drove me insane. I would LOVE to build or own something like that but there's no way in hell I would have the patience to make all those parts, making the same cut over and over and over again. I really admire his ability to do that. I guess that's why he's who he is and I'm a guy who can't cut a straight line with a bandsaw.

He's one third of the Making It Podcast, which I've been binging lately. The three of them chat about making things, making a living making things, making YouTube videos about making things, and a lot of other stuff. They all seem so nice and laid back, it's a refreshing change from the web's usual snarkiness and cynicism.

The one thing I will say about Mr. Diresta is that you shouldn't watch him expecting to learn how to use tools safely. He often does things that make me cringe but I understand and respect that he has confidence and experience that I will never have and he can get away with using tools that way. Of course, he also once cut off his pinky.

He has a bunch of tips videos out on the tubes as well and they're worth watching if you ever spend any time at all in a workshop.

I hope one day I have 1/10th of the skill and experience he has.

Yeah, before you go emulating his techniques, keep in mind that he's missing a joint from one finger, and imo it's a miracle that this is all he's missing

I watch these a lot. One day my 3 year old said "I want to watch jim-ee de-rest-ta mow his law" and I said "okay, sure".

This seems as good a place as any for this.... unique approach to workshop safety.

Band saws scare the hell out of me. (You can easily take your hand off with one.) Watching him work with one in timelapse gives me the willies.

I need more free time :-/

I assume he's making some money from the ads on these videos. That's something of a dream job right there - make things that catch your fancy, video it for revenue, which pays you enough to have the time to make more things that catch your fancy, and video them...
I'm glad this works. I'm glad these videos are now a viable thing.

Heh, I kind of like the odd crosshatched tooling pattern that left in the wood. I hope he didn't sand that out.

-1 for tablesaw safety in the axe video. Kickback can be deadly, so please do not try this at home.

No shit. I had to stop watching it. There are a lot of safe ways to make that handle, and a table saw isn't one of them. It was weird to watch the link right above where he describes the accident and then to watch him misuse the table saw so casually.

I like how he makes little tools for everything, like the template for positioning the drawer handles on the tool cabinet drawers, and the runner he uses for scoring the boards on the table saw/router.
