I was curious to see if the cat would have a strand of tinsel hanging out of its butt

Isn't this a link to an ad?
posted by Carol Anne at 10:48 AM on December 18, 2015

You can skip the ad and play the game.

14/20 so far. Can't unlock the damn gingerbread critters yet.

Right? And that candy-cane box! Where are the clues!

That was fun! Takes me back to the old Mac shareware games I used to play.

In the environment.

That was fun, and the music is surprisingly good for this sort of thing.
posted by sparklemotion at 11:02 AM on December 18, 2015

Thank you, man of twists and turns and jammy, for giving me exactly the sort of non-hint I needed to finish the game successfully! There was one environmental clue I had missed, which I shouldn't have.

Very cute! And I did not see that ending coming. I got at least one of the puzzles by random guessing, though.
posted by bearwife at 11:19 AM on December 18, 2015

I find in real-life most cats aren't as good at providing clues for where they've hidden things that you can figure out on your own without resorting to walk-throughs.

Ha! Got them all! And what a cute closing.

The cat's sexy dancing at the end was totally worth it.

Super cute, and just the level of puzzle I wanted today.
posted by Secretariat at 12:29 PM on December 18, 2015 [1 favorite]

Stupid. Smug. Cat. And then the sexy dancing.

Also, I can't help but wonder if I'm the only one that noticed (and I don't think it means anything) the candy cane swastika?

One of our most best beloved cats did have a penchant for eating the ribbon off the Xmas packages under the tree. We never saw a trace of that ribbon again, though.

There was one thing I didn't try clicking until about 10 minutes after head-desk frustration, then I clicked it, then the last four balls came in rapid succession. So satisfying to finish it!

familiar to cat-owners

I, too, fill my house with bizarre Christmas-themed locks.

Designing thematic puzzle locks is a very popular pastime in Raccoon City too, I believe. Even the police get in on the fun.

Are there any other browser-based games like this that folks can recommend?

Enter "room escape game" in Google, and you get similar types of games - but where you need to figure out the clues to escape a room in which you are locked.

I really love and strongly recommend Neutral's games (which may or may not have been featured here on the blu maybe 7 years ago).

Aargh. I've been stuck on the candy cane box for 20 minutes.

You’ll know when you can solve the candy cane box. Try something else.

Aargh. I've been stuck on the candy cane box for 20 minutes.

This is a hint -- stop reading now if you don't want any darn hinting --

The solution is not in plain sight.

Thanks!

Of course, after I posted that I tried (yet again) placing something in a specific location & it actually worked this time, which gave me the next item I needed to proceed. And now I've solved it & feel a little silly.

I thought this was going to be about the Icelandic tradition of a big cat that eats children who don't get any clothes as Christmas gifts (yes, a real thing).

It worked out nicely in that a whole bunch of times you think you've really looked everywhere and you're stuck, but each time it doesn't take very long to figure out something new - you find something before you get too frustrated. I wonder how difficult that sweet spot was to hit.

hmmm i'm stuck at 19/20, the only thing I can think of is the combination thing in the kitchen but I'm not patient enough to try all the random combinations it might be, did I miss a clue?

Yep, there is definitely a clue, again in the environment...all I will say is, look for similarly looking things in the environment, they're there.

Is it possible to get into dead ends? Because I am stuck and also obsessed. I am wondering if you can get things out of order and end up in a spot from which you cannot finish?
posted by elizilla at 12:40 PM on December 20, 2015

I don't think so. All the items have one and only one use, and I don't think there are any irreversible actions that make anything inaccessible.
posted by RobotHero at 2:38 PM on December 20, 2015

I've played through it a couple of times (did I mention the pain meds?) and there doesn't seem to be any catch to the order. Certain activities have to happen in order to do other things, but otherwise, no.

No, that is not possible. Just keep looking for patterns that match up and you'll get it, in whatever order.
