Touching Objects

"Paula Zuccotti travelled around the world and asked everyone from a cowboy in Tucson to a toddler in Tokyo to list every single thing they touched in a day – then she photographed them. The items tell surprisingly intimate tales of the people who picked them up." (SLGuardian)

Aw, I was gonna post this! :)

This is fascinating to me, though. I never think about all the things I touch in a day.

This is fascinating.

I'm a bit surprised at how little cash is shown in each of the pictures. There are a couple of them (not counting the two year old) where I don't see cash or a debit/credit card.

My initial thoughts, so early in my morning:
1) I apparently use far too many products in my morning grooming routine.
2) No toilet paper?

No toilet paper?

Seems like there ought to be a cow in there, too.

I love this. I kind of wish I could have one done, there would be cats and centrifuges and cells and computers.

No cats or dogs, no automobiles, no people, motorcycle wheel but no motorcycle, no sex toys, saddle but no horse, no tv sets..... hmmmmm...

"Zuccotti asks each subject to keep a list of everything they touch during an agreed upon day. An object is recorded just once, even if it the person touches it repeatedly. She excludes things like door handles, and large items like cars. Everything else is included, even items as insignificant as a train ticket or receipt. Zuccotti even asks everyone to list the food they ate or the amount of money they paid for it. Each subject takes Zuccotti through their day while handing her each item to lay out. Nothing is omitted."

Oh wow! Last time I heard the name Paula Zuccotti, it was when we were introduced in a workshop together and some of the work her team had been doing was up on the walls. World is so very small.

Good thing, too, otherwise I suspect that one hay bale would turn into "hay bale, hay bale, hay bale, hay bale, *sigh* hay bale…"

Well of course the cell phone is first. How would you turn the alarm off without touching it?
