Songs about New Year's, collected by our own Samm Bennett.

(And don't miss page two.)

Nice! There's also The Dismemberment Plan's Ice of Boston, my personal favorite New Year's song.

I much prefer Tom Waits' Christmas song myself.

This is a pretty epic list of New Years songs, though, I will absolutely be digging through this today.

"Tom Waits song about New Year's? No such thing!" I said to myself, feeling simultaneously kind of smug in my Waits knowledge and yet alarmed that maybe I'd somehow missed something. After clicking through I realized it's from the album Bad As Me which I have deliberately chosen to ignore.

... which makes me sad, realizing that we reached Peak Tom Waits just before Real Gone and we may never see him innovate or surprise us again.

AAaaaanyway, good list of songs there otherwise.

Swell stuff. May I add one from the incomparable Amy Allison?

Arguably, he did so much innovation and surprising between the 1980's and now that it might be a little much for us to keep asking for more anyway.

I'm content for Waits to be what he sounded like he was his whole life: a tired old man who needs a break.

Nice list of songs! I was actually thinking of doing a post similar to this, but this is better than what I would have come up with.

I do wish to submit Barry Manilow's "It's Just Another New Year's Eve", one of my favorites.

"Hell Broke Luce" surprised and delighted me, but I don't think he's obligated to surprise or innovate. His songwriting alone gives me enough.

Here's another one -- and I know Samm's not into Death Cab for Cutie -- "The New Year".

Here's Regina Spektor doing a bang-up cover of Peggy Lee's "My Dear Acquaintance (a Happy New Year)".

(The original is just as gorgeous.)

Listening to a cortex's Next Year's Gotta Be Better Than This One is an annual joy.

Absolutely agreed. I mean, c'mon - there are only so many Kathleen Brennans one can be expected to meet and marry in one's life.
