Pat Harrington Jr., ‘Schneider’ of TV’s ‘One Day at a Time,’ dies at 86 : "As the character was conceived, Schneider was a married man and an unrepentant adulterer who used fake maintenance problems to enter women’s apartments. Mr. Harrington, however, doubted that such an unpleasant type would fit in a show filled with far more likeable people.

"On Mr. Harrington’s insistence, Schneider was recast as a bachelor with a comically grandiose sense of his appeal to the opposite sex. 'At first, Schneider was pretty much a lecher,' he told People magazine. 'I made sure that got changed to ‘amorous.’ It bespeaks a certain respect for women.'"

He was also part of the zany crew of regulars on Steve Allen's various late night television shows, but I realize that's ancient history for most.

"Harrington was also known for his uncanny impersonation of entertainer Lawrence Welk." Ha ha!

Easy Come, Easy Go:

Lieutenant Ted Jackson (Elvis Presley) is a former U.S. Navy frogman who divides his time between twin careers as a deep sea diver and nightclub singer. Ted discovers what he believes could be a fortune in Spanish gold aboard a sunken ship and sets out to rescue it with the help of go-go dancing yoga expert Jo Symington (Dodie Marshall) and friend Judd Whitman (Pat Harrington, Jr.).

"So, we've got a deep-sea-diving nightclub singer, a go-go-dancing yoga expert, and... um... their friend."
"And I'm gonna play the friend?"
"Yep."
"Cool."

I remember Schneider as a really fun character, who probably would horrify me if I saw an episode now as an adult.

And okay, derail, but I haven't seen One Day At A Time since I was in middle school, at best, but every year when Xmas comes around and I hear Silent Night, I always sing along with the words of their answering machine:

"Silent Night, Holy Night
We’re not here but it’s all right
Leave your message as soon as you can
We’ll call back if you are a man
Wait until the beeeeep…. uuuunless you are a creep."

So sorry this doesn't seem to be on YouTube. You'll have to trust me

Pat Harrington, jr. also played Arlington Hewes, the animatronic president of "TPC", the ultimate evil organization behind the scenes in Ted Flicker's brilliant The President's Analyst (1967), starring James Coburn.

That's a long time ago, but the film is still worth a look, and deals -- in a 1960s way -- with many of the same issues we face today.

Wasn't he on a series of radio ads along with the actor who played Chickenman --- maybe a second series of Junior Mints ads in Canada?

I just saw him on the Buzzer! channel on a few of the panel game shows they had on for their Betty White-a-thon over the holidays, and didn't recognize the mustache-less, suit-wearing, clean-cut young man at first.

Then I thought, "Why is that man's voice familiar? Oh, my gosh, that's Schneider!"

I'd read he had Alzheimer's. Man. RIP

I want to hold my redheaded-bowl cut head in my hands like Bonnie Franklin and go "Awwwww, Schneider!!"

Miss you already, big guy.

Also very cool that he turned the character into a joke on sleaziness, instead of just a constant acquaintance-rape-joke in a family sitcom.

He ordered a sandwich from me a couple of decades ago at a deli I managed in Tucson. I recognized him, and he seemed happy about that. He was very gracious as autographed something or other, and I was left with the impression of a man who was thoroughly enjoying his life. Made my day.

Metafilter's own Schneider. Can we get a "deceased" on his profile?

I'd like to think that Schneider was an older and wiser version of Larry from Threes Company.

With a sweet tool belt.
