Post title is good advice, but a little rich considering the kind of bikes that get sold under the Merckx name and what they go for.

Another biking maxim for the financially challenged: Japan made really good bikes in the 80s and a lot of them are on Craigslist now.

Drezdn: I own more than one Bridgestone. Amazing Japanese made bikes, if you can find them.

There are a lot of other good ones too. Just look at the Japanese brands from that era. Steel is real :).

Miyata made the best of the Japanese steel bikes during the 80's by far. My team was sponsored by them, and our Team Miyata Dura Ace equipped bikes made me quickly forget about the Trek I was riding before the switch.
