Canadian Senator Brazeau hospitalized under mysterious circumstances

Canadian Senator Patrick Brazeau was admitted to hospital today under unusual circumstances. His condition is listed as critical but stable after undergoing surgery. Police confirm he suffered an injury in his home but there is no evidence of criminal activity.

Brazeau (mentioned previously) is possibly the most colourful politician in Canada now that Rob Ford is staying out of the spotlight.

Brazeau was appointed to the senate by former Prime Minister Stephen Harper in 2008 and almost immediately caused controversy by announcing he did not plan to resign as national chief of the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples and would draw two separate publicly-funded six-figure salaries. He stepped down from the CAP position, the same week as he was the subject of a sexual harassment complaint. Once appointed to the senate, allegations were made of his misuse of funds while at CAP, and an audit found that the organization had to return $260,000 of funding Health Canada had provided for treating aboriginal health.

Along with fellow Harper senate appointees Mike Duffy and Pamela Wallin, he was found by auditors to have claimed residence expenses inappropriately and had to repay the expenses.

And then it gets colourful.

In 2012 he challenged then-Liberal leader, now Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to a boxing match for charity. Brazeau was favoured three-to-one to win, but Trudeau defeated him in the third round.

When Canadian Press journalist Jennifer Ditchburn reported on his poor attendance record in the Senate, he called her a "bitch" on Twitter.

In early 2013, Attawapiskat Chief https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theresa_Spence was on a hunger strike to meet with Prime Minister Harper to discuss aboriginal issues. Brazeau openly mocked her and suggested she had actually gained weight during "her so-called hunger strike."

A few days later, Brazeau was arrested on charges of assault and sexual assault. He was suspended from the senate pending resolution of his legal troubles.

In 2014, just before his trial was set to begin, an intoxicated Brazeau became involved in an altercation with a woman and was arrested on new charges of assault, cocaine possession, uttering threats and breach of bail conditions. He pled not guilty. His belongings were thrown out the door of his Gatineau home.

Cut off from his senate pay, Brazeau took a job as the manager of a strip club in Ottawa.

Later in 2014, he was arrested for intoxicated driving and weapons possession. He was ordered to rehab for two months.

2015 was relatively quiet for Brazeau. He entered a plea bargain, pleading guilty to simple assault and cocaine possession in return for having the charges of sexual assault dropped. The impaired driving charges remain outstanding, as do the criminal charges for fraud and breach of trust (this case is expected to go to trial in March 2016). He has said he is focused on returning to the senate "as quickly as possible."

Oh yes -- in 2015, he did agree to act as guest referee at a wrestling match and was thrown through a table. (Journal de Montreal link in French.)

This post was deleted for the following reason: Maybe let's wait until we know what happened? Even weird jerks deserve not to be gawked at over mysterious injuries - and further to the link below, more so if it's self-harm. -- LobsterMitten

That's a great set of links for context, however I'd add one more from last August: Senator Patrick Brazeau reveals suicide attempt.

This is quite possibly a very sad story.
