I hope we can still be cousins

You may have seen the work of cartoonist Matthew Diffee in The New Yorker. The guy has a twisted sense of humor. But not all of his work makes in into the august magazine. So he collected some of his rejected ideas, and others from fellow cartoonists like Roz Chast and Gahan Wilson into The Best of the Rejection Collection: 293 Cartoons That Were Too Dumb, Too Dark, or Too Naughty for The New Yorker. Here's a selection.

I love the horse-drawn carriage.

Came here to say the same thing, bigendian. I laughed and laughed. I guess that makes me dumb, too.

Third-ing the love for horse-drawn carriage! I suppose that I, too, is dumb.

The face-painting one amused me, because of this AskMeFi.

I don't really get why they rejected a couple of the Gahan Wilson ones; it's not like they're really so much weirder than all his other stuff.

"Too Naughty For The New Yorker" does not sound like the most challenging bar to meet, to be honest.

This book alone ruined my opinion of New Yorker cartoon editor Robert Mankoff. Before, I was inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt. Now it seems like it's his mission to filter out any cartoon that's likely to make people laugh. A real laugh as opposed to a nod or grunt of recognition.

I lol'd at most of them. Well, a majority of them, anyway.

I thought the New Yorker bar was: Can this be captioned either (a) Christ, what an asshole, (b) Hi, I'd like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn, or (c) both of the above.

Relatedly, I kind of hate myself for how much I enjoy the shitty New Yorker cartoon captions tumblr.

I own and have enjoyed this book, and remain hopeful that there will be a Volume 2 that includes work from MeFi's Own John Leavitt (aka The Whelk), whose The-Nib-published "Hot New Trends for 2015"* was more New Yorker-ish than 90% of what is IN the New Yorker.

*featured in The Nib's Collection "Eat More Comics" which I also acquired via Kickstarter

Reminds me a bit of Kliban.

Balloon genitals is amazing. I haven't laughed like that at a cartoon since Far Side.

I have a signed copy of the rejection collection book from most of the contributors! (But I was rejected from the rejection collection twice)

Proud to say I own this book. Thanks, Goodwill. I used to have a copy of Cartoons the New Yorker Wouldn't Print, also a fine collection.
