Think you can tell a Democrat from a Republican?

Think you can tell a Democrat from a Republican? You are presented with a bill from 2005-2014, and have to decide if that bill was sponsored by a Democrat or a Republican. Some are obvious, some are tricky, and some are really surprising! [via mefi projects]

That one is straight-up testing your ability to guess the party of a Congressperson from New Mexico.

I think this is mostly educational in terms of showing how vague and unhelpful the bill descriptions are.

From reading the bills they sponsor? I'm sure I can't before even trying. I also can't tell an electric car from a gas-powered one from looking at their tires.

This is sort of a terrible "gotcha" game based on if you know the intricate priorities of particular members of Congress, and then what party they are.

40/63 with a large percentage of the misses involving suspending tariffs on chemicals. There's a lot of suspending tariffs on chemicals going on all over the map.

'To suspend the duty on glyoxylic acid by 50%'

N,N-dimethylpiperidinium chloride - perhaps better known as mepiquat chloride - is a plant growth regulator used to control cotton growth and maximize yield. Happy to help!

I didn't get a single one right because I thought they were all trick questions, so I answered the opposite of what seemed obvious to me. So, um, wait...do I win?

The tariff ones are EASY!

You just have to know what the product is used for in an industrial setting, then know which state has a high concentration of that industry, then know who all the sitting Senators/Representatives from that state are, then use that probability of party membership to inform your choice as to whether a Democrat or Republican was introducing bills to protect some group in their state that gives them a lot of money and controls a lot of votes.

Easy!

Don't overthink it. Will the bill have any meaningful impact on someone who is not rich and powerful (or white, or male?) then it's an R. I got 8/10 before the dumb iPad refreshed, but the two I missed were because the Dems aren't great, either.

I've updated my stats page with the top five misattributed bills. Only one is about chemicals!
