I am very glad that the OP's article gives the number for the National Suicide Prevention Hotline. Please use it if you need to.

I live in Greenville, and I'd see him around pretty often, usually at our bush-league Whole Foods expy or the farmer's market. I never spoke to him—I don't follow BMX and even if I did I'd respect his right to be left alone in public—but if we made eye contact I'd nod and smile and he'd do the same. At some point we added low-key finger guns into the mix.

I don't want to make this out to be more than what it was. I'm not trying to say that we had some deep connection or either of us affected the other's life. I still don't know much of anything about his career. But it was always nice to run into him, to have a brief pleasant interaction with someone I didn't really know, and I'm sorry to hear of his struggles and his passing.

(aside)

I will be very glad when sharing info on online resources is a normal part of things too. Because there are many of us who are dealing with depression or other similar struggles who find the idea of talking to a stranger on the phone to be an additional source of anxiety. I can promise that if I was in a state where I was ready to commit suicide, there's absolutely no way that I'd ever be able to call someone to talk, and if that was my only resource available, it would make me feel worse and probably *more likely* to go through with it.

So I'll mention that http://suicidepreventionlifeline.org has an online chat available as an alternative.

A good friend of mine was also a long-time friend of Dave and his family; she's been really devastated by this. Peace to him, solace to his friends and family.

Back in the mid 90s, I had a roommate who was a traditionalist when it came to sports. Football, baseball, and maybe basketball was all a man should need. He didn't really get why the world needed a second ESPN, and he sure didn't get the funny stuff with bikes and skateboards that ESPN2 aired.

He reluctantly watched the X Games with me that year. Dave Mirra took gold in BMX Street. What got my roommate to respect the sport wasn't the tricks, or the athleticism — it was a moment when Dave Mirra was announced as the gold medalist in BMX Street. The announcer mentioned that Mirra and the silver medalist (I forget who he was) were close friends and roommates, and that after the competition the two of them were carpooling home together. It was that comraderie and decency as a person that earned my roommate's respect.

I live quite close to where Mirra grew up. Back in the 80s I frequently drove past his house, which had an enormous wooden half-pipe in the very small yard, and would think wow, lucky guy to have folks that supportive.

This is just unbelievably sad.
