I really enjoyed Beat the Devil, which I discovered from this list.

Jealous for anyone who is about to see The Naked Kiss for the first time.

This is a good thing.

Gah... "The Payoff" (1935) has already been taken down.

I've just been going to YT and typing "film noir" in the search box lately. I'm not 100% sure about this, but this has essentially made a playlist, so I can run through three or four in a night. It's something like having the TV tuned to a late-night no-budget station in 1973 running murky scratched up transfers of forgotten b-movies, more or less without ads. Heaven.

Dang, The Big Clock isn't available.

The Great Flammarion is gone, too.

And The Naked Kiss is unfortunately a quite bad (very blurry) encoding.

A plug for Detour. Made on a tiny budget (shot in 6 days, as noted) but so good. And it's in the National Film Registry.

Well, the article is five years old. (Not a complaint, just pointing it out.)

I recommend starting with Detour - - it really is a great movie!

They seem free. They entice you like a quick tumble with a mussy-haired waitress. But when the bill comes due it will come with a bullet and a DMCA notice.

I think most of them are in the public domain.

shakespeherian: “Jealous for anyone who is about to see The Naked Kiss for the first time.”

Holy fuck that was an astoundingly good movie. Better than anything else on that list I've seen (and I've seen most.) It deals with all sorts of things movies from that era hardly ever dealt with – most of all with the perspective of a woman, and a sex worker of strong character no less who gives no fucks and takes no shit at that. Just stupendous. Thanks for the recommendation.

I'm curious about the intersection between this and the Roku Cafe Noir channel. Because, if someone isn't monetizing this by selling crappy ads injected into freely available movies then I'd be totes surprised.
